Rapped in from Baptist Draw and went up the tight dark slot of Upper Chute. Lovely canyon - pretty tight squeezing… some water, but only knee deep in April. Climbing out of the end of the canyon was easy and it was marked with a cairn.

toward chute buttress
11/9/14- returned, this time with mike, in order to finish business on chute benchmark. my half-decade old memory seemed a tad foggy as i didn't remember lots of the obstacles, but we made great regardless! chute benchmark is interesting!
4/5/10- hiked the canyon with the intention of climbing chute buttress, but my body was worn down from the week's activities and i decided to hike out the canyon and drive home.
Wow! What a great introduction to the canyon country. Beautiful scenery with really cool slot canyons. This is a must do for the aspiring canyoneer.

Chute to Crack
We used our three day weekend to to do some exploring of the Swell. After a hike of Bell and Wildhorse the previous day we tackled these two canyons. The crossover between the canyons is not obvious, and we ended up handlining down 30 ft to get into Crack Canyon. Crack is definitely the more interesting of the two canyons and we had almost decided to wade a section of very cold water, before we found an alternate route. The two canyons together make for a fun day with some route-finding challenges. Great adventure!

Chute Canyon
I made the mistake of hiking Crack Canyon first so this was kind of a let down. Still some impressive scenery though.

Chute Canyon
This is one of the easiest hikes in the San Rafael Swell. It is a nice canyon that almost everyone can do. It can be combined with Crack Canyon but the cross-country terrain between the two canyons is not hiker friendly so most people do them separately.

ChuteThe upper section of Chute is way more interesting than the lower end. I did the Baptist Draw/Chute loop on May 2 2008 with my brother Richard.

Just okDid as a long loop with Crack. Loop is a long slog and neither canyon has much bang for the buck.
