Geology

Very interesting also for geological notes.

Re: Geology

Thanks -- when you know the history, you see a lot more.

Wow

You really knocked yourself out on this one. It belongs on the front page, and I'm recommending it on the thread for that. Great job.

Re: Wow

Thanks, I try, but it's not a really popular area. Though Lake Mead mts. probably got some snow last night, there are no glaciers! ;^)

It may be the last page I write for a while. I'm just at odds with the one-mountain-one-page format for these little guys; I need a cathartic theme.

About a year ago I started a page for my favorite nearby area, La Madre range west of my house -- I've done about 15 wild "hikes" in that area. In short, it's just hard to get up the gumption to finish a multi-hike entry, when I do pretty much the same stuff for my local trip reports anyway, and people end up e-mailing me for GPS tracks, anyway.

Beautiful Job!

Thorough and interesting. Utah is awesome! Cool place I'll need to check out some day. Nice job, Moapa!

Re: Beautiful Job!

Utah is awesome, I'd agree (I'm just 160 miles from Zion) -- but the paleovolcano is in Nevada!

Re: Beautiful Job!

I meant to type Nevada! Sheesh. I do that often when discussing desert locales with folks. I often do the same thing when talking about "The Wave."

Thanks, I try. It adds a lot to know what you are looking at.

Way cool page

I love it when other science geeks show their passion for what they do. I certainly learned a lot from this page.

Thanks -- it's not my vocation, but geology is a vocational hazard.

Not Enough Info

This page needs more information. As it stands now, it probably only takes 3 or 4 hours to load, for people with dial-up.

I voted 10, but note that this is binary 10. If more information is added, I will vote decimal 10.

Re: Not Enough Info

I agree. I'm going to extend the geohistory from nucleosynthesis forward, and add a section on the relevance to the Franco-Prussian war. I think I may put back the section on Djibouti (there actually was -- no sh*t -- a section on Djibouti).

By the way, is that binary score in big-endian format, or little-endian? Judging by your profile picture, I'm guessing big-endian. Ha ha, just being cheeky.

Re: Not Enough Info

"Does this canyon make my ass look fat?"

I would try to say the size is an illusion caused by the narrow canyon. But this is not even the narrow part. I don't know if I set the size record for the Main Fork of Leprechaun Canyon, but I do know I exceeded the recommended 180-pound size limit when I was only 15 years old!

Definitely big-endian. And somehow there is also a joke in there about the most-significant bite being first.

I basically

don't know what you guys are talking about. I recently had Sp-member Tracy introduce me to the Cleopatra/Cottonwood Springs area. I was observing the scenery from the ridgetop, and Tracy continued to the top of Hamblin. We were in agreement that a future hike would be more time-efficient by going directly up the secondary wash towards the base of Hamblin. Then, you can follow 'switch-backing' game trails up to the summit. - Larry
(There's water showing in the spring, by the way!)

Re: I basically

There are lots of ways up Hamblin! You really don't need too many directions, since you can see the mountain from the road and the hardest route is class 2. However, some approaches have a lot more loose rock.

For this summary, I took a GPS log for a route that I knew "worked". Part of the goal was to use more distance to lessen the grade; another was to stay on ridges most of the time, rather than in washes. Most people are happier when they can see where they are.

Another local group goes farther up Cottonwood Wash before heading W. It's pretty hard to make a "mistake" on Hamblin!

As for the strange conversation above -- Day Hiker and I have dry and edgy senses of humor.

Re: Well...

You apparently have the information and knowledge put together.
I appreciate the information that you are gathering for us. I didn't even know there was a paleovolcano out there, until I saw Tracy ... then he turned me ON to your page. I need to do some more exploring AROUND in that area. Take care of yourself! (Thanks for the information and maps!)

Excellent

This is one of the most informative and skillfully composed pages I've found on Summitpost. In the future (when I have time), I'm going to suggest that the admins upgrade the status of this page to area/range. I'd like to see more individual pages for the peaklets attached as "children" to this master page. Northshore, Redstone, and East Redstone already exist. I intend to create pages for The Sentinel and Hamblin and perhaps more in the future. What do you think?
