Re: What's...

The mountain in the background is Mawenzi (16,992 feet)

I don't think that's Mawenzi....

At least if that's from the Lava Tower west of Kibo. fastandlight went up Machame which goes by the Lava Tower west of Kibo. Mawenzi is east of Kibo and not in view at that point. Is there another Lava Tower (I'm only familiar with the one)? My guess is that this is looking west towards Meru. Here's a rough map of Kili showing the relative locations of the Lava Tower (Lava Tower Hut), Kibo (Uhuru Peak), and Mawenzi. Here's a diagram / drawing showing the profile from the south. It is a cool photo though - it looks like the peak is just floating in air.

Re: I don't think that's Mawenzi....

Thank you for all the information, however I still fail to see how that is Meru. I could be wrong (do not have the best sense of direction!)

I do agree that it is a great photo. :-)

You are right...

John, I've just seen many photos of Mawenzi and those peaks in the photo don't seem it. I also think these peaks in the image are Meru and may be Little Meru (Socialist Peak). Thanks for the explanation and you Drazil for the attempt.

Definitely not Mawenzi

I agree with Diego. I climbed Mount Meru and Little Meru in September 2001, having attempted also Mount Kili. I don't think that mountain is Mawenzi. If I had to bet my money I would say Meru and Little Meru are the most likely peaks seen in that photo
