Climbing the second pitch of Flower of High Rank. This is the hardest 5.9 that I have ever done. A spectacular climb. Twenty five stars, at least.

Hardest 5.9?

You need to get out more "Dawg!" I've seen Clark Jacobs free solo this thing in laps; I've climbed it myself (with gear of course), certainly not THAT difficult.

Re: Hardest 5.9?

I don't know Deb. Clark's an animal. It seemed harder than any 5.9 I led at Joshua Tree this season, like Touch and Go, or High Strung, or Ace of Spades, or Cake Walk, or Invisibility Lessons or Looney Tunes, or Popular Mechanics or Overseer, or Ball Bearing, or Super Roof. But, you may be right, because Flower was the first real crack I ever climbed, but that was about a year ago. I led all these Joshua Tree cracks since then, so I will have to go try Flower again for a fair comparison.

As for needing to get out more, you couldn't be more right. I can never seem to get out enough. In the past year I have climbed about 65 days and I would like it to be more like 100.

Re: Hardest 5.9?

I'm chiming in here about 4 years late, but gotta say that Flower is longer and more sustained thna the Josh routes you mentioned. A few "full value" josh 5.9's might be Norweigian Wood, American Express, Rock Candy and it's neighbor Split Personality...
