Wow....

looks more like something from the west side than the Pearly Gates. Where exactly in the Gates was this?

This was in the entrance to the narrowest part. Apparently, meltwater from the summit snowfield creates an ice flow (60-70 ft long) there this time of year. That day, even the rest of the mountain was covered with a thick ice layer. I had to place a couple screws descending through the Pearly Gates to maintain sanity. Bergschrund to Gates exit was much more of a strenuous frontpointing session than anything on Reid last May.

front pointing up the South Side? Man, just a reminder of how variable conditions on high mountains can be, awesome photo. God, I still can't believe this shot in some ways.
