Day 8 of the 2010 Sierra Challenge. Trip Report.
Great day hike. Climbed up from Chocolate Lakes. Stayed mostly on the 4th class slabs on the left side of the chute - fun scrambling! Great views of the Palisades. Descended to green lake. First time I've hiked/climbed in the Sierra and never encountered one person all day! Was even more surprising given the popularity of the S. Lake/Bishop Pass area.
Sierra Challenge alternate -- nice rest day after Huxley
From Sky Haven Day 8 of Sierra Challenge-cool summit surroundings, jagged ridges and pinnacles abound.
After thoroughly enjoying the West Chute we were treated on the summit with a visit from Bob Burd out on the Sierra Challenge of Sky Haven.
Highly Reccomended route. Fun solid climbing all the way up. Climbed with Deb, we kept it spicy w alot of 5th and 4th class
Oh man! This was an awesome climb! Blair and I kept it as 4th and 5th Class as possible with some 3 to rest on. Loved it....and so easy to get to as well. Hit Vagabond on the way out too.
From 7th Lake. Great views.
Did it the right way this time from Green Lake, then descended to Thunder and Lightning lake on the way back. NICE!
I climbed this one day thinking it would be a part of like four peaks total, but I got hella lost. I wound up cruising along the north ridge which wandered me past two other summit registers that hadn't been signed in like fifteen years! One was informally called "Thunder and Lightning Peak," and the other was something like Peak 13,112 (basically a bump on the ridge). Either way I found some really fun climbing before those peaks along the ridge. And the view of the Palisades from Cloudripper is so sweet!
Perfect day for a summit climb. Came up from 7th Lake and the worst of it was the nasty mile up a scree slope which took us only 45 minutes!
We, myself & my W.P.'s Jackie & Steve Neau, & Cindy Thaw, hiked/climbed the talus field adjacent to 7th Lake,(large talus), then up the talus slope to the saddle, then up the talus NE ridge to the summit. Beautiful windless warm day ! It's always great to get "high"! Duck Soup !
Nice short scramble up, though I topped out on Vagabond instead. The talus descent to Green Lake sucked on the return, though.
Climbed up a chute on the West Face with my dog, came out just below Vagabond, so we climbed that then went on to Cloudripper..dog had no problem at all,,barley cl.3
Great perspective of the Palisades! Nice meeting you and DB at the top, Courtney...
With DB. Then on to Vagabond.
From tarn east of Seventh Lake up big snowy chute. Moved to the rib that goes directly to the summit once the snow started to soften up. Class 2-3. Fun descent of east ridge on mostly snow and then scree to Seventh Lake. Beautiful morning climb, then walked out in hail and then rain.
Big week in the Eastern Sierra. Kearsarge Peak on Tues., Wonoga Peak on Weds., Meysan Lake on Thurs., Lone Pine Peak on Fri., Mt. Barcroft in the White Mtns. on Sat., and Vagabond Peak/ Cloudripper on Sun.
great loop hike, easily accessible from south lake trailhead - climbed west chute, basically just an extension of the ridge formed by chocolate peak that divides ruwau and chocolate(?) lakes - then traversed ridge to cloudripper and vagabond and descended via green lake and then cross-country to the parking lot - great day out
Hiked with Laura and the Sierra Club. Lotsa fun.
