More Like Hurdles  Sucess!

A fire felled many trees that criss-cross the path. Be prepared to hike all over them. Practice your hurdles.

Night hike  Sucess!

This was a quick trip to county highpoints for Yolo, Sonoma, Napa, Solano, Sacramento, and Yuba.

Thanks to the limited daylight hours this time of year and the unexpected amount of time spent on Little Blue Ridge, the greater portion of this hike was spent in the dark. Because it was dark and I had my dogs in tow, and because we were rushed, I did not take time to take any notes on my phone and the memory is hazy from only 2 hours of sleep the night prior and time spent on Little Blue Ridge.

It was no big deal as following the "newer" road meant almost no clambering over deadfall. Gaia maps came in handy finding a route to the SW summit, and there was a thin layer of snow on top.

We rushed our way down as we were in a hurry to get to Russian River Brewing.

Second Time's a Charm  Sucess!

Originally hiked with my boy, Jason. We summited Cobb... but not West Cobb. Doe! Went back with my hiking buddy, Cody, in weather that was worse. Didn't see anyone else the entire time. Once over on the flat top of West Cobb, it took us a little while of scout out and find the Cairn signifying the summit. Trail gets sketchy in the middle. Keep heading uphill and you should hit the road. Enjoy!

East summit  Sucess!

Nice spring day. Not time for main summit but since I live 15 minutes away from the T-head probably be back in due time.

Easy navigating  Sucess!

Started at the gate. road goes all the way up and over Cobb, cross the saddle to the CoHP, which is next to a pair of pine trees you can see above the brush, Bushwacking was minimal unless you get off route.

Double  Sucess!

Parked at the turnout before the gate, had a preloaded GPX track on my Garmin to make route finding a breeze. Really only needed it after getting the main peak, I was able to follow a fading road down to the saddle towards the West Rim but it was all cross country going up to the Sonoma County highpoint. This was a bit of a bushwacking challenge. Loved the hike though, so quiet and picturesque, nice and shady. Trip report is HERE.

70 degrees in January  Sucess!

It is a little strange the "community that you drive through (as the sp page states)to get to the TH. But the trail is nice, shaded and worthwhile. Not much of a view though from the summit, to many trees, not even the large boulder at the summit gets you uo high enough to see much.

Pleasant Memorial Day Weekend Hike

Solo hike from Whispering Pines. Very friendly people and dogs on the way to trailhead. Steady climb with breezy silence but for grouse calling, quail crossing the path and blue jays chatting. Bagged both summits due to good weather and use of compass. The road that leads south then west from the main summit actually curves/drops into the bowl/saddle then rises again to the west summit. Easy bushwhacking with waist high manzanita. Nice views & isolation atop this county high point.

Back around '97  Sucess!

From a trail out of Cobb. It was a little bewildering because the summit area is heavily forested. You have to do some exploring to find a good view.

Two attempts  Sucess!

Up from Whispering Pines both times. First time made the summit but not the county HP. Had been raining all Christmas 2005 and I decided to go Jan 1 no matter what. Napa was flooding and when we began it was pouring rain, got completely drenched and once on top there was no visibility and began to sleet. Had to turn back.

March 11 went back, great weather and views on the way up, but actually began to snow on me during the return, made the trip through the forest very scenic. Good bit of snow coverage on top.

Ken on the Cobb  Sucess!

Very nice day. Parked near the WP gate. The route does get a little vague as you approach the East Summit so be prepared to scout around a bit. Found the register on top of the boulder under the tree. CA P3k 2/46.

Tagged the Sonoma HP too. CA Cohp #8.

2nd of the day  Sucess!

After bagging St Helena, came over here to tag Sonoma's high point. The hike up the road through the forest was pretty nice, and the summit of Cobb is a cool place. Took about 15 mins to go over to the West Rim, no problems finding the register. Nice and obscure, just the way I like it. 23rd CA COHP!

Maple Shadows Road  Sucess!

Not too much to see on this one. Nice warm spring day. Also tagged the Sonoma County HP. I cleared as much of the trail as possible. There are still lots of downed trees but the road is pretty easy to follow.

Snow in wine country  Sucess!

From end of Maple Shadow Road from the east. Fun stroll. There was a lot of snow from the night before. 2-4" most of the way with well over a foot on top. Should've brought gloves. 2 hours to the west rim COHP at a leisurely pace.

Too steep, not today

Quite a bit steeper than I was expecting, though nothing I couldn't slog through. Made it up to about 4300' when I started to feel like crap, and realized I was dehydrated. I'd been taking plenty of water breaks, but as it was so chilly out I was only drinking enough to wet my throat. I stopped to drink and rest, but as soon as I stopped moving I felt my temp start to plummet. When you get an overwhelming urge to lie down and curl up in a fetal position it's generally a Very Bad Thing. Oh, and then my GPS crapped out on me. That sent me packing downhill.

Plus Sonoma CoHP  Sucess!

The hike to Cobb was very pleasant. The trip over to the west ridge was an adventure, wish I had a machete with me. Also, make sure you have cash when crossing the bay area bridges, it's a $25 fine if you don't. They don't take plastic
