Still looking for the Coffin. i was working the graveyard shift.
A sunset hike after doing some others in the area including Dante and Perry. Trip Report.
Climbed Coffin Peak in late afternoon and descended while the sun was setting. The actual summit is more rugged than the ridge leading to it. It was a very windy day.
Hiked Sawtooth Mountain in the morning, in the Bullfrog Hills out toward Beatty. Super windy! By this climb it was warm and still with fine apenglow.
A fun, quick summit after visiting Dante's View (and benchmark.) Fantastic flowers covered the entire summit area. Our timing must have been perfect to get such a treat in Death Valley.
I did this surprisingly nice little peak several years ago. I remember the register had been placed by the 'Subatomic Rock Club' back in 1969. What a treat!
Regarding Bob's comments about the south face's ruggedness, Rick Kent and I once explored a subdrainage on the peak's south side on our way to Styx Canyon. We found a couple of nice rappels that hadn't been done in perhaps 30 years. Atop the first one, we found a gnarly, ancient bolt that we decided not to use; and at the bottom, a second gnarly, ancient bolt lying in the sand.
