I Didn't Think We'd Get Sleet in June!!  Sucess!

We took our time for this all-day trek from Black Balsam Knob to Cold Mountain. As we started up the mountain, the weather quickly changed and there was sleet and rain until we set up camp on top. Not much in the way of campsites on top, so we tucked in under some small trees out of the wind. It's probably better to stay in Deep Gap and then hike up without packs. Still, the views to the south were truly breathtaking. Climb up wasn't as as bad as I thought it would be and there's reliable water about 1 mile up the mountain.

From Camp Daniel Boone  Sucess!

It was 5 streams and a wet spot up to Deep Gap once the trail turned E. It was steep out of Deep Gap. There's a good spring just before reaching the W ridge. And it's a very narrow summit ridge (for the E, that is).

Route Climbed: Art Loeb from Daniel Boone Camp Date Climbed: 12-10-05  Sucess!

The first time I've hiked the peak via this route. Trail easy to follow with a half-dozen blowdowns. Quite a stretch of the legs! Great winter views all the way up. A great hike! Check out some photos I took on the hike HERE.

This was my first major hike - bagged a bunch of 6ers and got to see some really cool stuff. The trail was pretty overgrown between Flower Knob and Deep Gap, but after Deep Gap it was straightforward. Cold Mountain is just one of many things to see in this area.

Parked at the Black Balsam parking lot off of the Blue Ridge parkway with my wife and my neighbor. We began the hike around 7am at the trailhead for Art Loeb 3. Made brief detour to summit Black Balsam and again for lunch at Shining Rock. Encountered rain once we reached Deep Gap which lasted the majority of the hike up Cold Mountain. The 3000' elevation drop from the summit of Cold Mountain down Art Loeb 4 to the Boy Scout camp (where we had parked a second vehicle), was tough and began to wear on my left knee causing the last 5 miles to be wrought with pain. Overall it was a truly spectacular hike. It took us about 12 hours and 5 joints.

Wow! this hike was much tougher than I thought, it seemed to go on forever. We had the mountain to ourselves. There was snow on the summit. This Southern sixer is perhaps one of the harder ones in North Carolina. We actually finished this one at night.
