Lived up to its name
We were just a bunch of guys with a free weekend looking for something to do. Someone (probably me) pointed and said why don't we climb that? So we got as close as we could by road and headed up the mountain. Didn't know about any trails. It was a brush bash all the way; some places we had to climb over big rocks. When we got to the top we were in the clouds and it was kinda chilly. Then white stuff began swirling around us. It was just a flurry, but it made the ascent unforgettable. Don't know which side we went up. There was a farm house where we parked the car.
Climbed up on 6/21, spent part of the night on the outcropping at the summit before the dog woke me up to tell me a storm was coming. And what a storm! 6 or 7 hours later the sun finally came up and I got a few hours of sleep while my gear dried. I've had a lot of rough nights camping but that was, hands down, the roughest. Thank God for good dogs! I will definitely be doing this again...but I'll probably wait until the next drought...
Same story as Nate Baxley (because we happen to be the same person...)

from the boy scout camp
Two hours and forty minutes to the top and about the same going down. I saw a trail description somewhere else that the trail was not blazed but it definitely is blazed in red now. There was a geocache ammo box just below the summit area off to the right of the trail as I was heading up.

I was planning on a five summit day of the southern section of the Balsams, but the Blue Ridge Parkway was closed & Cold Mountain became my Plan B. 15 degrees when I started, 30 degrees when I finished. Climbed via Art Loeb Trail- Deep Gap- summit from Daniel Boone camp. Poor trail visibility proving the postings are serious when map & compass are encouraged. Mostly a shaded hike in the morning. Parallel park at the trailhead kiosk on the river side of the road (per the very courteous campground manager). The parking signs say forestry use only, but apparently this is incorrect & pending a signage change. I only saw two other people on my way down.
Hiked the Art Leob trail from the Black Balsam parking area. Thunderstorms and rain killed a lot of the views, but the trail was very nice for the most part.

D Boone camp and SR ledge
Have come from Shining Rock Mtn across "the ledge" connecting ridge and come up from Daniel Boone boyscout camp at the bottom of the valley. Steep last bit to the top with a very narrow summit ridge. A few good rock outcrops with great views. Good Mtn.

Climbed the Art Loeb Trail from Camp Daniel Boone to Deep Gap and then to the top. I had the top to myself for lunchtime and enjoyed the views back to the other sixers in the area.

Brrr!
Wow! This was definitely a challenge for me! Hiked from the Daniel Boone Boy Scout Camp up the Art Loeb trail in a Winter Storm Warning. I tagged the USGS marker on top in 60+ mph wind gusts and headed straight back down through freezing rain. Got back to the car borderline hypothermic. Note: water resistant does NOT mean water proof. Thanks Cold for teaching me that the southern Appalachians are wetter than the northern Rockies. Learned that lesson the hard way.
This was my first real mountain hike, and I'll never forget it. We only saw one other person the entire day, and it was so peaceful and quiet. Fantastic.

Perfect end-of-summer-hike
I'm normally not one to "bag" summits/peaks; I'm really there for the "mountain high" experience. This hike was actually a sort of penance, however, for cutting short (on account of heat and drought) a 140 mile section hike on the AT a week prior (did 90 miles). With the 10.5 mile Cold Mtn hike from the Daniel Boone Camp I figured I could at least reach the 100 mile mark, which I guess is respectable... Anyways, I got a late start on the 3 1/2 hr drive, so I started on the trail around 10am. This, turned out to be a blessing in disguise since it allowed me to share my hike with 2 separate hikers. And the hot, dry summer weather had actually abated slightly to allow for a comfortable 70 degree temp. The trail wasn't quite as rugged as I had imagined, though it was challenging. The views from the summit weren't horrible, however, also weren't as grand as I had imagined(probably due to muggy summer air) . I will have to come back in winter to see the snow and the better views that I suspect the crisp winter air will provide. Taken altogether, though, it was a completely worthwhile experience that I enjoyed thoroughly. Also, as a side note, I saw probably about 20 hikers that day while descending -- also not quite as solitary as I had imagined.

Cold Mountain in the Cold
Did this on a perfect winter day. There were great views without the leaves on the trees. All told, the 11.5 mile hike took us six hours, including some short breaks for lunch. In heavy snow, however, the trail would be hard to find as there are no blazes.
