The climb itself it quite easy...the road to the trailhead was a little more difficult! Great view, worthwhile hike.

Twin Peak and Cone Peak from Vicente Flat camp
Headed up Stone Ridge to Twin Peak then ridge-whacked to Cone Peak, back down to Vicente Flat. Cross-country was not bad and the views and wildflowers were gorgeous.
...but when he was at the NPS, I was grateful to have someone so close to hit the Ventana with!

dream come true
On a plant collecting trip I was able to finally make my dream come true. It was all clouds on the way up until summit break. With the grandest views i have ever seen. Watched the sun go down and the almost full moon come up. Favorite peak experience yet.

After visiting Mt Manuel the previous week, i returned to Big Sur to take advantage of the spurt in good weather. The views from the summit are amazing.
Route Climbed: The Wrong Trail Date Climbed: 5 November 2005
Followed the trail at the end of road up to the north ridgeline and then the north ridgeline to the summit. Why do I do these things when there are easier routes?

Cone Peak Trail
A night hike under the light of the full moon. Drove down from Monterey, arriving at the trailhead around 11pm. Needed only a small pen-size flashlight in certain places, I am probably the only geek in the world night-hiking without a headlamp.
Not a breath of wind on the summit, and warm. A couple other hikers were camping just below the summit when I arrived around 12:15am. I walked carefully, not wanting to wake them.
Hiked back down to the trailhead and camped at the end of Cone Peak Road.
Route Climbed: Kirk Creek to Gamboa loop Date Climbed: May 1, 2005
A long 25 mile, approximately 7000' gain adventure. We started from the Kirk Creek trailhead, took the Kirk Creek Trail to Vicente Flat, continued on the Vicente Flat Trail to Coast Ridge Road, walked along the road to the Cone Peak Trail and took that up to Cone Peak. On the descent, we continued on the trail down to Trail Spring, making a side trip to Twin Peak along the way. From Trail Spring we took the Gamboa Trail to the tick infested, slumping and disappearing Stone Ridge Trail to a coast overlook on the ridge between Limekiln Creek and West Fork. From here we decended on a combination of use trails to a dirt road that lead down to Hwy 1 just north of Limekiln Creek then hiked a few miles on Hwy 1 back to the car.
Route Climbed: Dirt Road + Trail from Nacimiento Date Climbed: 27 March 2005
3 hours up, 1.5 down. Good exercise, clouds moved in as I neared the summit. Then it started drizzling. Ended in the dark in a total "rain out". Yay me.

Very hot day! Took my time reaching the summit to conserve energy. The bugs were incredibly thick and a total downer on a great day. A bit of haze but overall excellent views of the entire Ventana Wilderness and the Pacific. This would be a great hike in the winter. Only one rattlesnake encountered on the whole hike and he was more scared that me!
Route Climbed: Lookout trail Date Climbed: November, 2003
This was the day I learned D can enjoy an easy day hike. The gray moody views of the ocean, rugged beaches and surrounding hills from the top of Cone Peak were inspirational.
