Great 2 day trip to the area. Climbed Cooper, Marten and Martenette the first day and then hiked over to the S side of Thunderbolt to camp. The next morning I climbed Thunderbolt and Blackfoot. Only 6 more summits to go in the IPW.
9/25/05 - Climbed Marten Peak from camp near Lower Stone Lake and then traversed to Cooper (climbed Cooper's SW Ridge). Descended Cooper's North Ridge. Easy scrambling. Would like to go back to climb the South Buttress from Gourd Lake.
5/28/12 - South Buttress from Gourd Lake this time. Camped at the lake and did loop over Cooper, Marten & Martenette the next morning.

South Buttress
That Gourd Lake area really impressed me despite having a lot of experience in the IPW and despite the crappy weather we endured. The class four moves were very exposed and very commiting. That was about my comfort level without a rope. Afterwords we termed the route "hang your ass out over a thousand feet ridge."

From Gourd Lake
Descended west into Hell Canyon after climbing Marten Peak.
Route Climbed: Southwest Ridge from Gourd Lake Date Climbed: August 26, 2004
My wife Blynn and I followed Gerry Roach's Southwest Ridge route with a few variations, due to poor route finding that led to some exposed scrambling. It was a beautiful day and we enjoyed complete solitude and incredible views from the top.

Desolation and solitude. Cooper Peak is deffinately worthwhile for thos wanting something a little different. This corner of the Indian Peaks remains free of the hordes that crowd the rest of the wilderness. Dogs Sopris and Raymond accompanied me on my ascent.
