Couloir out of Access Creek

Couloir out of Access Creek

A view up the couloir that gets one out of Access Creek and onto the traverse to Luna Col (Luna Pass). When snow-filled, it's about 40 degrees, pitching up to maybe 50 for the last 30-40 feet. With aluminum crampons this was very sketchy and I climbed from snow cup to snow cup looking for the flattest ground possible. There was no way we were going to come down this later in the day. Fortunately, there is another, wider couloir to the left (east) that is also steep at the top but provides a steep wooded bank on the left side. We rappeled the steep trees (two 30m-rope rappels). I recommend going later in the year when the couloir has melted out (plus you can ford Big Beaver Creek more easily). July 4, 2006.
