Curious Pine Marten

Curious Pine Marten

This is only the second pine marten I have ever seen. I spotted him amongst some woodland talus while going to fill up my water bottles and he was kind enough to oblige me with a series of good poses. Grouse Mountain, Holy Cross Wilderness, Colorado. 8-13-2007.

Re: Awesome!

Thanks. There were definitely some lucky circumstances involved here. Now if I could just get a bear to sit still for a few poses...

Re: Awesome!

Nice image! As far as "lucky circumstances", not to belittle the accomplishments of good photographers (a good photographer will come up with a good photograph because it's the assignment, not because of luck), I truly believe that the best photos are granted by good fortune. Consider your request for a posing bear: My son and I happened to be exiting the AT at Clingman's Dome in the Great Smokies on the day that the NPS found it necessary to close the park--the most visited national park in the nation closed to all entry, but we were inside. And, a bear obligingly gave us a great show right next to the road as we were driving out of the park (we were unaware of the closure) because he wasn't scared away by frequent traffic. Good luck creates a bear that posed!

Black Bear

Thanks for sharing your good luck and your really nice image!

Re: Awesome!

It's such a nice photo. I would vote on it again if I could. I love the setting he was in too. The greens really add to the photo. I don't care if it was just good luck. Even good luck still requires quick response and being prepared.
Regards, Anya

Re: Awesome!

Thanks Mark. Your bear photo is awesome and just the kind of picture I'd love to have taken. I'll keep hoping for some good luck and will be admiring your fine bear in the meantime.

Marten

Excellent photo. I just saw a pair of Martens a couple weeks ago in the White Clouds here in Idaho. They were playing in some rocks well above tree-line at around 10400' elevation. I'm told it must be mating season since they are usually alone. I'd never seen one of these before, and had to ask around to find out what they were. Very similar to a small house cat in size and personality. (photo link)

Thanks for posting,
Dave

Re: Marten

Thanks Dave. Good catch on seeing a pair of them like that! The more the merrier as far as I'm concerned but I bet any pikas or squirrels living in those rocks up there wouldn't agree. I bet they were shaking in their boots.

Wonderful shot!

That really is an awesome moment, great job capturing it.

All the pine martens I've seen have been scurrying off. What was he looking at (other than you)?

Re: Wonderful shot!

Thanks. He was creeping around in a woodland talus field so I assume he was looking out for squirrels and rabbits and other small game. I think I held his curiosity just long enough for him to determine he couldn't take me in a fair fight. After that he was long gone.

Great shot !

I saw one in Alaska several years ago.
Aren't they related to the Wolverine
or Weasel? Really nice photo!

Re: Great shot !

Thanks. I believe they are related to the wolverine. They have a similar and unusual shape to their heads at any rate. Their behavior seems more like a weasel; they are curious.
