I once

saw this impressive mountain from the airplane going back from Bankok to Copenhagen - in 1972!

My flights in & out of Tehran have all been at night so I never saw Damavand from a plane. In childhood (1970s) I used to see it from a road that we used to take to the Caspian coast resorts. On clear winter days, it was even visible from the roof of our house in Tehran.

It is so much taller than everything around it. The mountain that you see in this picture in front of Damavand on the right side is 3994 m high but it only looks like a foreground hill in this shot.
