Tragopogon dubius. The Greek genus names means goat-beard. Before the seed heads release their featherlight parachutist seeds, their parachutes (pappus in scientific terminology) ripen pressed together in a manner of a shaving-brush (or, if you will, goat's beard).
The species is European in origin. This year, it positively thrives at mid-elevations of Wasatch mountain. On a pre-dawn Millcreek trip, I just couldn't resist shooting the full Moon though a feathery ball of salsify seeds.
