Ubehebe Crater - not a great story, but pretty traumatic at the time... Years ago, I was there on vacation, while still living in Florida, and I found myself at the top of the crater looking down. "Wow", I said. "How cool. I think I'll head down to the bottom real quick and check it out." The water stayed in the car cuz it was only gonna be a few minutes. Not so - the loose volcanic scree crap sucks the life out of you on the way back up, which I cockily (not sure that's a word) tried to do by running from the crater bottom back to the rim (perhaps 750 vertical). 2/3 way up, I dropped to the earth, exhausted, started to black out and called out for help - some German guy brought me down some water and nurtured me back to my senses. Kinda silly and embarassing now, but back then, I was still a newbie and wasn't used to the dryness and heat of the desert - Water? Who needs it?

Untitled CommentNot so high, but when you consider Death Valley is below sea level, the buttes take on a new meaning. Good page and can't wait to see the pics.
