A Beautiful Park

Came here in January of 2018. There sure is a lot of pretty stuff to look at from the truck, but my situation didn't really allow me to really explore the backcountry. There are some very interesting remote valleys accessed by some rough, time consuming washboard roads if you are into beating up on your vehicle and doing a lot of driving. My gimpy old canine really enjoyed hiking on the sand dunes in Saline Valley and especially the Eureka Dunes. We (I) also had to check out Badwater, of course, but skipped the other touristy stuff. Next time!

HOT! HOT! HOT!  Sucess!

Visited Golden Canyon, Scotty's Castle, Furnace Creek, Ubehebe Crater, and Badwater Basin, the lowest place in the Western Hemisphere. I would love seeing DV in bloom and The Racetrack on a return visit.

Annual Winter/Spring Ritual  Sucess!

It is now more rare to be away for more than a year than it is to visit twice in a year.

Anniversary Camping Trip  Sucess!

Not really a mountain but it was a climb and a scramble. Total hike was about 4 hours, great trails and views.

Bright light, vast area  Sucess!

Years ago I drove through DVNP. Made a point to walk around the Devil's Golf course, and of course the low point. What I most remember is that it was already 95* by nine in the morning! It was hard to tell if it was hotter with the windows open or closed! A bleak, forbidding but beautiful region. I wish I could have seen a rain, that would have been something.

Visited DV almost ten years ago now. The thing I remember most is that it was raining....really hard! I suppose this doesn't happen often. Amazing place.

Here with GF  Sucess!

Didn't get to do too much because the GF wasn't much of a hiker but we still explored many of the trails around Zabriskie Point and the overlook on top of Badwater Basin. It was somewhat cool in Vegas (68) but a toasty 88 degrees at Badwater itself. I want to go back for Telescope Peak.

Scorching hot!  Sucess!

Drove through Death Valley on the way to the Sierras. We stopped at Badwater Basin to add the lowest point in the country to our list of cool things in life! Go figure, 2 days later, we were standing on top of the highest point, Mt Whitney, too! I was nervous our car would break down driving through there, to be honest. 110 degrees!!

High/Low Trip  Sucess!

I had a set of National Geo maps that showed the highest point (Whitney) in the continental U.S. and the lowest in the western hemisphere (Bad Water) so we cooked up a trip to do both. One day we were on top of Whitney where it was near zero in the morning and a day later we were sipping beers in shorts and t-shirts while enjoying the 90 degree temperatures in Death Valley.
