Denali and the East Buttress

The conditions of the ice on the Buttress can vary significantly from year to year. When I climbed the East Buttress in 1977 there were two bergschrunds that were crossed on tenuous ice bridges, and there was a large overhanging serac wall above the prominent shoulder, where we had our second camp on the buttress. We passed the serac on steep ice to the right.
