Denali's summit ridge

Yours truly descending the summit ridge of Denali. If you look closely you can see the summit marker right of center. Photo by Ben Barlin, June 1, 2008.

Congratulations! I'm training for Denali now. What would you recommend??

Re: Yay!!

Books have been written on this subject but I'll be brief with my thoughts.

If you're going with a guided group, then you mostly need to focus on physical training. The guide will help you with gear/clothing selection, etc.

If you're climbing unguided, then you'll have to do a lot of research. There are plenty of good guidebooks out there. Also, the guide companies list recommended gear on their websites that will help. Beyond that, your team must be fully self sufficient (experienced in winter mountaineering, trained in crevasse rescue, etc.).

Lastly, don't under estimate the mental stamina required for a long expedition. Be mentally prepared to wait out storms for several days in a tent. Harsh conditions, no hot shower or soft bed, and being away from family for 3+ weeks can be tough. Quite a few people turned around when I was there merely because bad weather was forecast for 4-5 days. What did they expect was going to happen on Denali?!

Good luck!

Re: Yay!!

Thanks for the advice. Is there a guidebook that you used that you would recommend? I'm not planning on going with a guided group.

Re: Yay!!

Assuming you are climbing the West Buttress, Colby Coombs' guidebook is helpful. There are also a lot of excellent trip reports here on SP worth reading. My own TR shows the itinerary that we followed which might help with your planning.
