Day 2. We woke up at Gilmore Lake and leisurely made our way up the PCT to access the ridge to Dicks Peak. We started the 'scramble' up to the summit and quickly noticed multiple groups ascending the ridge. I counted 15 or so people and a dog. To our knowledge, not one of them actually tried to climb Dicks. Not really sure what they were all doing there. We enjoyed lunch on a windless peak before traversing the saddle to Jacks Peak. While doing so thunder started rolling miles to the south around the Mokelumne Wilderness. We had enough time for Jacks, but we stopped the leisurely pace. Forcing class 3 up to Jacks was fun, but once we made the summit we found the highpoint and headed down straight away. Our goal was to make it to the north shore of Aloha, but found an incredible campsite on the south slopes of Jacks near a tarn, so we set up camp. Immediately we were hit with heavy rain, and we jumped into our tents for a 30 minute rest. The rain stopped, the skies cleared, and we enjoyed a very relaxing evening looking down upon Lake Aloha.
16 mile day hike from Emerald Bay out&back. Not very desolate out there on a Saturday, but still beautiful.
This was supposed to be both Dicks Peak and Jacks Peak, but the wind slowed us down. A small group was able to tag both.
Day hike loop past Susie Lake, then up Jacks and across to Dicks. Fun day - 8 hrs 15 min. Had to deal with some snow in a chute up to Jacks and also on the descent from Dicks.
Beautiful day. Only saw one other person in the back country.
Also, repeated the same route with John, except we dropped down from Jacks. John did not like the traverse.
Long day hitting all four peaks (Tallac, Dicks, Jacks, and Pyramid) from Glen Alpine.
Wonderful climb, saw lots of interesting wildlife. Off trail and a steep scramble at the top forced us down just off summit.
From Glen Alpine Springs, the ridge at the end to the summit was a nice scramble with a few class 3 moves.
Round trip from Glen Alpine, went to Dicks then Jacks, descending down Jacks SE face to meet the PCT which took us back to the Glen Alpine trail. Trip report is HERE
Fun hike over from Tallac. Continued on to Jacks Peak afterwards.
Continuing Pyramid to Tallac traverse. Trip report.
Overnight trip at Dicks Lake from the Eagle Lake trail head. Climbed with a group of nine from SMC. An early start put us on top at sunrise and made for some great pictures. Round trip on this one was about 12 miles.
Climbed from Bayview trailhead enroute to Jacks Peak
Spectacular 4th of july fireworks show the day prior. Done as a loop with Mt. Tallac and down a wild waterfall canyon
A beautiful afternoon hike from Emerald Bay. Took the PCT to Dicks Pass on the way up then returned via the west shore of Dicks Lake.
Day hike from Glen Alpine to Jacks and then traversed across to Dicks.
Dayhike from Inspiration point. Perfect weather. Couldn't find a register, but there were two full waterbottles at the summit -- weird.
4 day backpacking trip through Desolation Wilderness. Definitely more challenging to climb with a large pack, but we still made it! Then we traversed over to Jacks! Long fun windy day.
Yes it's true we hiked ice gear all the way into Dicks Peak because there was nowhere else to find ice in Tahoe. Turns out the extremely low snow and cold temps created very firm snow conditions (what there was of it) and a thick WI2 flow in a gully on the right side of the north face about 40 meters long, which we enjoyed. I don't expect to see this ever again!
Started from Bayview TH via PCT. Used Eagle Lake Trail for the return.
Nice hike and great views on E side of Crystal Range with quite a bit of snow still lingering from previous week's storm. Pretty windy but it only made it bearable; very hot when calm.
