Great first Rainier climb with good partners.
Was at low point of my life in terms of fitness back then, and just about had to crawl the last hour to the top. At least, it felt that way :)
This was an interesting trip, Rainer's more eventful that I had managed to figure. But it was fun.
Quick ascent. Plus two others.
Typical slog up the summit via the DC. Wish I would have experienced the mountain via a different route for my first time on Rainier but either way a great weekend climb.
The typical zoo at Camp Muir (100 people). Crowded on the route, lots of guided groups. Heard a huge rock avalanche off of Little Tahoma early in the morning and seracs collapsing later in the afternoon. Got stuck behind a guided group on the descent down cleave.
Climbed with Stan Morgivich
Wanted to make it three days but weather and group dynamics wouldn't allow it. Big fun suffer-fest. I will come back for more!
Amazing trip! Trail was very well marked. Great weather, except pretty windy on second day. Did not summit because of altitude sickness, can't wait to try it again in 2011.
First attempt and a success without using guides. Camped at Protection camp (better view) just below Muir and lost a day due to whiteout & storm. Overall great experience on a big mountian. Lingered a little too long at the summit and had a difficult descent on slushy snow on the Cleaver. Don't underestimate the dangers on this mountian, especially on this route.
Hey man how long did it take you to climb rainier total? I am looking into doing it next August. Was there any very technical terrain? What special equipment did you need? Is it possible to do it in one day?
We were under prepared and stupid. Should not have gone but somehow found success thanks to great weather and good help from other teams. I learned a great deal from this climb.
We had to cross two ladders, but other than that still great condition. We left late from Camp Muir (4.30am), because it was very cold. Not very crowded.
Day hike of Rainier via Disappointment Cleaver from Paradise-17 hours round trip. Perfect clear blue sky conditions.
Lead a team of five up the route after a day at Camp Muir to acclimatize. Route was in excellent shape and was very direct. Went mid week so it was not too busy for Rainier...about six other rope teams left with us around midnight. 6.5 hours to crater rim, 4.5 hours descent w/ 2 newbies.
Great day on the mountain. Went with RMI.
Awesome mountain but unless you are an absolute beginner I would recommend a more challenging route. It was like a cattle trail and tons of people. Get a really early start to avoid the crowds.
Made it as far as Ingraham Flats. Avalanche danger was too high on slope above Flats. Just 2 days before my climb there was a massive slab avalanche which killed one climber and injured several others. Also, on "summit" day, weather was pretty gnarly - high winds and complete whiteout conditions. Will try again in July '11
First climb, and so glad I did it!
What a great climb!! Want to do it again.
