Rained from trailhead to trailhead ... won't recommend the plastic tube-tent we used on that trip.

First of five
Four and a half hours to the summit from Elk Lake via the Beckhorn which is slow but about right for early in the season. Hardly any snow left at all up there. Black flies were around but not biting much. Went south on the ridge from there.
An awesome week of weather that I got to enjoy today! Hiked up Dix Mt, packed for all weather. Trail was great until I got to the slide. Then steep snow and ice the rest of the way, but even that part was in good shape. The sun was shining and at the summit it was much warmer then what I had read on weather reports. I never wore more than a t-shirt (well, on my upper half!), didn't need my coat or any other layers I brought along. Views were awesome from Dix summit and the Beckhorn too. 10 hours round trip from Rt 73 which included plenty of time on top and pictures along the way.

Dix Range Traverse
About 20 miles of horrible snow conditions, brutal mountain ascents and descents, and unmarked, untamed wilderness. You know you're on an epic when you leave camp at 7:30 am and don't return until 11:00 pm. With that said, adding five more 46ers, getting awesome weather, and experiencing killer views made it all worth it!

Climbed Dix Mountain 4857' during a 2 night backpacking trip out in the Dix Range of the Adirondacks. After summiting Hough Peak, we bushwacked the heard path to the summit. The vegetation was thick and there was at least 2 feet of wet snow the entire way up, but we slipped on our snowshoes and made it up by 4pm.

Long day
Long day hike but had an early start. Elk Lake to the Beckhorn then over to the summit and then a long descent to Round Pond. Number ten is in the books after an almost four year hiatus...

5 in one weekend!
In June '78 I knocked-off 5 peaks with my Scout Troop and a great leader that hooked me on wilderness adventures (Dix, East Dix, South Dix, Hough and McComb)

Dix to Hough
Elk Lake to Dix, over to the Beckhorn over to Hough. Steep and fun. Lots of good views. perfect winter weather. One of the nicest winter hikes I've done. The day before we got Macomb to South Dix.

Long day, late start
Did Dix as a day hike from Round Pond. When crossing the border, the US Customs Agent told us that we wouldn't be able to clim Dix in a day (we started at around 10 AM), but we did! Took us about 7hrs. Hot day, with nice view from my first peak of this range.

1st time to the Dix Range
My first trip into this range was great. Hot and hazy but still great views from the deserted summit. Took the Beckhorn trail up and descended via Hunters Pass. Cooled off in the streams on the return.

Dix Range Traverse
Did this as part of a one-day Dix Range Traverse. Came up the Macomb slide and then through the herd paths to South Dix, East Dix, back to Hough, and up to Dix. Beautiful sunny day with a few clouds here and there. Stunning views in all directions from the Dix summit and Beckhorn!
Nice long hike, but the view from the top is worth it. Different perspective from high-peak region

First Winter High Peak
My friend lugged me out to go on my first winter hiking trip over spring break. It was after this trip that I was hooked on hiking, the Adirondacks, and determined I should finish all 46 High Peaks.
