History of the first ascent is truly unique. In place there were two teams: Bonington and Whillans opened the route ahead of Italians who climbed the next day!
Bonington repeated the same performance in 1961 on the Central Pillar of Freney ahead Desmaison and Piussi...

There's a pic in Boningtons' photo book, I think from that expedition with Whillans sitting staring at huge pile of empty beer or wine bottles. The caption reads "contemplating our lack of progress". I think the infamous bad weather of the area was largely responsible. :D
Aha aha, Windsor, quite true! I know what it means, I was twice down there. Places where it's crucial to know how patiently wait one ray of sunshine between a storm and the other in company of fellows ....
