2nd time up here. First time was Christmas Eve 2020.
This was the first time I've ever snowshoed a peak. The only snowshoeing I had done before this was some very short, flat trips. I don't think I'm very in love with the strap set-up on my MSR snowshoes. Awesome views at the top (Castle Peak, Sugar Bowl, Donner Lake). We pushed the envelope on the amount of available daylight hours, as it was just about dark when we got back to the car.
Mt Judah and Donner Peak via Pacific Crest Trailhead and Mount Judah Loop trail. We were on the trail by 10:50 and made it to the summit of Mt Judah by Noon. We wore snowshoes the entire way as there had been a big snow storm earlier in the week, but fortunately the trail had been pretty well compacted in most areas by other hikers and skiers by the time we arrived. We made our way back down to be beginning of the Judah ridge and then up to the summit of Donner Peak by 12:30. Party of 2. 1.85 miles and 1 hour 10 minutes to the summit of Mt Judah. Another 1 mile and 30 minutes of hiking to Donner Peak. Weather was sunny with intermittent cloud coverage. Hiked without a jacket or gloves until we reached the ridge and then strong winds picked up. 1,200 ft of elevation gain to the summit of Mt. Judah and another 250 ft for Donner Peak. 4.25 miles, 1,525 ft of elevation gain, and 2 hour 40 minutes round trip.
Great place to be for sunrise over Donner Lake.
Last of the day 5 of 5, happy I brought my headlamp for the rest of the hike to the car.
About four feet of good snow. Shoed most of the way up, climbed the last twenty feet of bare rock to summit. Windy!
Easy, nice one.
Pretty and easy. Worth the detour.
Piece o' cake. Saw bolts for climbing in some odd places...
Meet many hiker's doing the PCT
We decided to break in new snow shoes and gear we were going to use on future hikes. Gorgeous hike and views...was a lot of fun on snow shoes. Weather was good, brilliant sunshine and a great workout to boot. This is one of my favorite hikes so far. My husband and I have been to this one quite a few times.
Nice walk up in cold temps with the whole family. no snow really to speak of yet.
Always a fun hike. PCT top, winter route down. Great snow conditions.
Crampons to start , post holing to finish. Great day!
Climbed as part of SIG II training w/ SMG
up from the snowshed wall
Enjoyable traverse of Donner/Judah/Lincoln. Sort of made our own trail up Donner then hooked up with the PCT. Trip report is HERE
Found a little steep and exposed slope on the north face for some fun.
Ascented the north face with a group of 12 climber from Sierra Mountaineering Group.
