Easy Hike  Sucess!

We made a short side trip while driving from New Orleans to Dallas after running the Rock & Roll Half Marathon. Good thing this was an easy hike. Very nice area.

Climbed Mt Magazine and Driskill Mountain during a 2-day highpointing trip with Sarah. The weather was cool but clear both days. (HP #39)

Great day!  Sucess!

What a very peaceful and enjoyable hike. Me and my 11-year son stopped on the way to the northernmost part of the state. A beautiful quiet highway leads up to the trailhead. No other visitors were there when we arrived, and all we could hear was a few birds chirping. A 55 degree sunny sky made for perfect conditions. Easy to find your way up, just stay on the widest, most traveled looking trail. When you get to the base of the south summit, you will actually head NW and take a clockwise path around it before the last steep approach to the north summit. Perfect for casual or beginning highpointers like myself!

Pleasant Morning Hike.  Sucess!

We hiked to the highpoint of Louisiana and then spent some time looking at the old tombstones in the cemetery at the trailhead. State HP #45.

Humid hike  Sucess!

Getting warm and humid. Quick hike through forest that was probably more wildflower-strewn a few weeks ago. HP#15...and two in one day with Arkansas!

HP #32 - a fun stroll thru the woods  Sucess!

Hiked this one with my son Lance (his 6th HP) on our 5 southern state high points sojourn (this was our 5th state hp in 6 days). I thought it would be more anti-climactic; however it was enjoyable. It was additionally more fun than I expected because we ran into a couple from Las Vegas (where I'm from) on our way up as they were making their way down (small world!!)

If you do this one and have time there is a Bonnie and Clyde Ambush Museum nearby that is quite interesting. It is located in Gibsland which is 7 to 8 miles north of where law enforcement "off'd" Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow on Hwy. 154 in 1934. There is a stone historical marker at the actual site.

HP #5  Sucess!

HP'd Arkansas the day before, rained the whole way down to LA. Made for a wet, soggy hike. Not too bad, though, as the trail is sandy. Sun came out half-way up the mountain, so beautiful views, birds tweeting, and over all a pleasant and enjoyable hike =)

HP #6  Sucess!

Drove from Arkansas after doing Signal Hill. Started at the church, with rain coming down and a fairly muddy trail. On to Texas.

Mt Zion Church TH  Sucess!

While visiting for Thanksgiving in Tulsa, my youngest son and I gave this one a go. I think the caretakers have made it "far too easy" now to follow the trail to the summit. Nice view of Jordan mountain from one of the vantage points. I find it incredible that the red mud on the soles of my boots from Driskill still linger in the crevices even though I have been out hiking in the snow a couple of times since.

surprising...  Sucess!

loved the church/cemetery "trailhead", including the two outhouses...no chance to get lost on the .8 mile "trek" up to the summit---lots of info posted. Fun little evening jaunt....too bad there isn't a nice little guest house nearby! Had to drive to Shreveport for the evening.

HP # 9  Sucess!

Had to wait out a steady rainfall with some lightning before I was finally able to make a dash for the summit. Slogged through some mud (in my new running shoes :( It seems that they've added a little to the summit since the photos I had seen in Wingers book. Nice views of N. Louisiana. Surprising to see rolling hills in Lousiana. Pretty countryside by Driskill Mt.

Gnat-tastic  Sucess!

Nice little walk in the woods but there were a ton of gnats. I had to use my shirt as a swatter.

Summit register?? Not back in 1990   Sucess!

#35 for me, number 34 for my daughter Vanessa, and the last of the SHPs under 1600 feet for the two of us to visit. With this hike, we completed all SHPs east of the Mississippi except Virginia, which I did not climb until May, 2009, on the final push for the last of my 49 state high points.

HP #14  Sucess!

Pretty glad I did this one in January. I hiked up in the morning and it was still 65 degrees. I can't imagine what it would be like in July or August.

First High Point

On Dec 6, 2008 my family successfully completed our first high point. We drove in from Barksdale AFB, LA and made our way to Driskill Mountain. It might have been only 535 feet, but it was a victory to us.
