Poor Beta
I took the ridge forming the south edge of the "normal" ascent gully based on a report (from someone I know, no less!) that said the footing on the this ridge was good. It wasn't. Maybe not as bad as the dreaded headwall, but steep, loose, and time consuming nonetheless. I came back down the headwall, making the main wash before I needed to pull out the headlamp.

Long PM hike
After doing Last Chance in the morning, I drove down to do this from the Racetrack Road. The directions on the page are less than helpful -- it's probably easier to start from 8-9 miles up the road, not 10.4, and Point 79xx' is not that obvious. Basically, go up the big alluvial fan to the canyon mouth, then take a ridge to the north. Turn west through a saddle, and you'll finally see Dry across the valley to the west. Trip report.

East Route
With Heather. I knew it would be a full day, but it was even more draining than I expected, possibly due to the fact that I'm still getting over bronchitis. 20th for me on the DPS list.

Loop route
Carl and I hiked up a canyon from the north. We spent the night between Dry and the unnamed peak to the east. We got to the top fairly early and hiked down a canyon south of the unnamed peak. this Canyon ended up having a few sections of class 3 rock that we were unable to avoid. We brought and drank about 4.5 gallons of water on this overnight trip. Beautiful views from the top!

Snow conditions
Fresh from a major storm, I found myself slogging through deep snow in areas and the upper part of the drainage was snow covered.
Very exhausting hike up and over the drainage...interesting and original approach to the peak summit..not straightforward and psychologically draining. What an incredible view of Tin Mountain on the way back!
Got an amazing 360 degree view of the Sierra, Inyos, and Death Valley and white mountain range all covered in snow from the fresh storm. One hell of a 9 hour 20 min day!

DPS Route?
I went up the wash, down the canyon on the west side, then the first ridge out of the canyon to the summit, so a variation of the DPS route. As for the wash climb from Racetrack Road, it had to be the worst wash climb ever. I see many are starting to climb the northern ridge and skipping the wash entirely. It would have to be pretty awful to be worse than the wash.

Somehow, the pictures don't do it justice. Sure it is a slog, but a solo hiker gets a chance for introspection -- it seems *really* in the middle of nowhere, once you drop over the ridge.
I got the idea of the south ridge from Kathy W -- boy that was a pleasant descent.
If you take the time to go all the way there from the east side, be sure to walk west and north across the top -- that's where you'll get the best views.
