Durakopf - Monte Salomone 2275 m
Monte Salomone is a summit located North-East of the village of Tesido at the entrance to the Val di Casies. As all the mountains located in the region South Tyrol/Bolzano Alto Adige, near the boundaries between Italy and Austria, this mountain has two names: Durakopf is the original Tyrolean toponym, while the italian name is Monte Salomone.
It is the higher of the two mountains - the other one is Lutterkopf/Monte Luta - situated along a ridge which flanks the Taistner Alm on Alpe Tesido from the orographic right side. The mountain is located on the watershed between the Val di Casies and the Valle Anterselva, both lateral valley of the Val Pusteria.
Durakopf is an essentially grassy peak that can be traveled on in all seasons, becoming much more interesting during the winter months, when it offers an excellent opportunity for an ascent on skis or snowshoes, or with crampons, depending on the snow conditions.
The starting point to climb Durakopf is the parking lot located immediately after the Muderlhof mountain farm (1584 m, restaurant), reachable via a panoramic road from Monguelfo and Tesido in Val di Casies.
Coming along the A22 highway exit Bressanone, then continue along the SS49 Val Pusteria state road up to Monguelfo (about 60 km). Exit Monguelfo West and reach Tesido 1203 m. From the Tourist Office of Tesido pass the church and continue driving. Pass through Moncucco 1407 m, reaching the mountain farm Mudlerhof 1620 m and to the wide parking lot just above.
Durakopf - Monte Salomone Normal route
Summit quote: 2275 m
Difficulty: EI (in winter), otherwise E
Difference in level: 653 m from the Mudlerhof parking lot
Starting point: Mudlerhof parking lot 1620 m
The climb begins from the car park of the Mudlerhof farm (1620 m, restaurant), reachable from the village of Tesido. Take the forest mule track number 38A towards Malga di Tesido/Taistneralm. Proceeding on the mule track, with a constant moderate slope, you go up into the woods.
Anyhow some beautiful openings allow fine panoramic views towards the Dolomites. The itinerary proceeds without steep sections with a constant climb and with rather long development, reaching the Malga di Tesido or Taistneralm 2012 m.
Once you reach the mountain hut, proceed along the trail n. 33, going up to a saddle with wooden signposts where the itinerary joins the other one coming from Lutterkopf-Monte Luta.
Here you turn sharply to the right following the trail n. 31 and proceed along the fine ridge with a view of the beautiful Rudlerhof peak on the right. The ridge will lead you to the panoramic summit of Durakopf.
Descent: from the summit reverse the same itinerary
Durakopf can be summited also in combination with the ascent to Lutterkopf. For the complete description see the page Lutterkopf-Monte Luta
