2' of fresh snow
Had to break trail through fresh powdery snow on snowshoes. Wonderful way to avoid the insects though. Had to dig around for the summit plaque

Fall Colors
Left the trailhead at sunrise, which made for excellent photos at Whale Lake. The fall colors were great. Views from the overlook were great, and getting to the highest point in Minnesota was neat. Met one person with her dog when I was nearly back to the trailhead.

Eagle Mountain (Minn.)
I got a bit of a late start on the afternoon of 29 September 2010, and found this highpoint to be a little more challenging than expected. The first three miles are fairly flat, but the trail is strewn with large rocks that must be negotiated carefully, especially after a morning rain. The ascent over the last half-mile is fairly steep, and the large summit plaque was a welcome sight. Then I had to hurry somewhat to get back to the trailhead before dark. It's beautiful country, especially in early fall, and I hope that you'll have more time to enjoy it than I did. The drive up from Duluth along Lake Superior is spectacular. This was state highpoint #28 for me.

Rockier than expected
Hiked this after a week on Isle Royale.
Only a small handful of cars in the parking lot. I met all of their owners on my way up, and once again had a state highpoint summit entirely to myself. As mentioned in the profile, the views are to be had a short distance below the summit.
A much more rugged trail of exposed rock and root than one would expect in Minnesota. And the last half-mile or so shoots up-up-up!
After finishing the steepest part of the descent, I ran the remaining 3 miles to the trailhead.

EAGlE MOUNTAIN
My 3rd highpoint. Nice hike, beautiful day at the top. Encountered a black bear cub towards the end of the hike, did not see the mother bear thankfully. Great fun hike!!

Short hike
A nice little hike via the standard route. I'd like to return and try the longer route from Brule Lake someday. State highpoint #35.

Winter ascent
My father and I wanted to do a little winter camping, so we spent the night at Whale Lake. It was 0(F) when we woke up. I ran up and tagged the peak while my father decided to stay back and break camp. I think he was in a hurry to get back to a warmer climate. This is my 35th state HP.
Climbed Eagle Mt in the dead of winter. Luckily it was a lighter than normal snow year so we were able to make it. I love this area in the summer!

I started bagging state highpoints in 1985. Summited while on my 8000-mile Great American Road Trip, in which I bagged the last 5 of my 49 state high points. Decided 12 years ago to forego Alasaka, I'd much rather go to Nepal if I can go on another 3 week climb somewhere. Met a nice couple near the summit. Bugs weren't too bad, which was good because I lost my repellant. Beautiful day in the woods, then back to the road to head for Iowa (my #49 and last) and on home to Seattle.

Springtime adventure
My son, Travis and I hiked this during very wet conditions in the rain. Lots of snow still on the trail and half a dozen stream crossings where we had no choice but to wade. The water was even above some of the boardwalks which I am certain must be above water later in the year. The boardwalks that weren't under water had 12 inches of snow still on them. Despite the conditions we had a great time - especially compared to doing Iowa's highpoint the day before and Wisconsin's highpoint the day after. I highly recommend Betty's Pies for lunch afterwards - just north of Two Harbors.

Absolutely BEAUTIFUL winter hike up to Eagle Mountain. The weather was a "10", about 12 degrees, light wind, fresh snow from two days ago that still hung on the evergreens making for a enchanted winter forest. The trail was traveled enough that there was never any doubt that we were headed in the right direction. We hiked up and back down in a little under 3 hours, oohhhing and ahhhhing all the way. There is a LOT of snow up there so while we did not actually locate the summit marker, some winter campers who were up there and had been there many times assured us we were at the peak. We would absolutely recommend this as a winter hike to anyone who enjoys a beautiful Minnesota winter wonderland. The hike was a breeze.

If you hike this one in September, the mosquitos are not much of a problem. Wonderful hike with my wife and saw a few people along the way. We had expansive views along the way at a rocky part of the trail close to the top. We really enjoyed the north shore of Lake Superior as well.

home state high point
I'm from Minnesota, and spent a great deal of my childhood camping in state parks along the shore of Lake Superior. Had the pleasure of hiking to the top of Eagle Mountain 5 or 6 times. Always look forward to going back.
One thing the page doesn't mention; the bugs are HORRENDOUS on this trail! The last view times I've gone, I recall being absolutely engulfed by mosquitoes and flies on the summit. Thick woods and bogs all around = insect mania. Bring some bug repellent if you want to enjoy your lunch up top!

Solace of the Woods
I love the Great Northwoods! This was an awesome hike just when I needed one; was going through some tough times and the natural quiet gave me the time and peace to do some soul searching! The blueberries at the summit weren't bad either!
