Beautiful area  Sucess!

Really nice hike

Got hailed on... hard

Hands down one of the most beautiful areas I've ever been to. However, I had to turn around shortly after starting to climb the mountain as it started to hail very heavily, causing the rocks and dirt to become dangerously slippery.

Be warned, if it rains, the trail turns into a small creek, and you will have very wet feet!

US State Highpoint 19/50  Sucess!

First attempt on June 23rd ended shortly after starting, with my partner spraining their ankle and us being relentlessly swarmed by blackflies, nearly running out of gas on the way back down all the loose dirt roads, burnt off most of the last of the clutch on the motorcycle riding it to keep from losing traction.

Second attempt solo the next day, June 24th, rode up without partner or most of the equipment and had a much easier time with the “roads”. Got to the trailhead, nuked myself with 100% DEET, and did it as a trailrun,. About 100 minutes round trip, ate while running, and the DEET wore off and I started getting swarmed again just as I was changing back into my motorcycle gear. Very exciting as a trailrun, beautiful view from the summit. Blackflies are one of god’s many punishments to humanity for doing colonialism. 19/50 done.

Late winter(!) hike to the top  Sucess!

Trail was completely snow packed. Although the sides seemed to be thawing so I punched through to my knees on occasion. Did not use crampons, snow shoes or yak tracks. Not needed today. Beautiful day for a hike. Made it to the top in 1:45 carrying 40# pack. Summit sign had been previously uncovered from deep snow so it was easy to find and was actually looking down at it since the snow pack is still pretty deep.

Highpoint # 26  Sucess!

First of four highpoints during a road trip from Minneapolis. I got lucky with a gorgeous autumn day. Beautiful, clear, sunny skies and the temps warming to the upper 50's! Fantastic hike to the summit via the Eagle Mountain Trail and not a single mosquito at this time of year!

Beautiful - Remember What Region You're In  Sucess!

I had a wonderful time on this hike. Now, as a disclaimer, if you compare this mountain to western mountains or use metrics like vertical gain and elevation as a standard for evaluation, yeah you might be disappointed. But for the Great Lakes Region it's really something.
The first part of the hike is mostly flat but rough. There are a lot of rocks and roots in the path, and with how damp it was when I went it quite slippery. There were more species of mushrooms and fungi than I have ever recorded anywhere else. I lost count around 30. The end of the hike gets rather steep and I broke a bit of a sweat as I skipped up from boulder to boulder.
The top affords a better view than anywhere within ~450 miles, and I was lucky to see the fall colors of the aspen.
Highly recommend if you're in the area.

Tons of bugs in a steady rain  Sucess!

This was a long grueling day. I broke camp at Apostle Islands in Wisconsin and crossed into MN about 6 am and it started raining. Although light or moderate most of the time, it didn't stop for almost 24 hours. I stopped at Grand Portage NHS and hiked a small mountain there before getting to Eagle Mountain down those long gravel roads.
I was the only car in the lot and the mosquitos attacked me as soon as I opened the car door. My BWCA permit is probably indecipherable because I was so rushed and under attack by insects. Even pausing for water during the hike was risky. The trail was super rocky but not a lot of sustained gain until you get close to the end, which is a dead end with a plaque and literally no view. Plenty of mosquitos though. There is a viewpoint a few hundred yards down from the HP and I bet both it and Whale Lake are lovely in good weather and sans mosquitos, if such a thing exists. I had been planning on camping nearby but the all day rain intensified after my hike so I drove back to Duluth and found a hotel. Not the way I drew it up but # 41 done.

Midwest high-pointing in fall  Sucess!

First of three on this trip. Several inches of snow on the ground, but it was well packed. We did not even put on microspikes, just were careful in some spots. Absolutely perfect day... 20 degrees, calm, mostly sunny. It was a perfect day and a nice hike. Surprisingly nice views at the top (below true summit). I actually proposed as well, so there is that..

HP#32  Sucess!

Can't stress enough how horrible the mosquitoes are in the BWCA in the summer. Hit this HP in the fall or winter if you can, else you can't enjoy it. I did enjoy the remoteness, however, and I didn't see anyone else which I love!

#45  Sucess!

About 3 hours car to car at a very mellow pace. With Jesi. Oppressive, stifling heat in the forest, many bugs, but that's part of the deal in this part of the world. Nice area.

35th State Highpoint!  Sucess!

Beautiful hike on a gorgeous day. Mosquitos were terrible, but as long as we kept moving they didn't create too much trouble. If you stopped to take a drink though, they would swarm you! Finished the full 7 mile trip (with a small wrong-way detour) in about 4 hours. Hiked with my 16 year old niece and my wife. It was niece's first highpoint experience. Beautiful views down at Whale Lake and up above at the vista near the top. Northern Minnesota is gorgeous! Highpoint # 35 for me.

Glorious day

Flew to MKE and rented a car to hit the Midwest Lakes Area high points. Eagle Mountain was third of 5 for this trip. I stayed at the Eagle Mountain Trailhead the night before. Drive to the trailhead is very straight forward on well maintained compacted gravel road. Took the Eagle mountain trail. Very straight forward. The views at whale lake are spectacular. There is a viewing opportunity near the top. Stunning views from this vista. There are no views from the top. Nearing the highpoint you will need to go up and then take two right turns to finally reach the HP plaque.

HP #38!  Sucess!

Long trek through the snow, minimal elevation gain... climbed this in the winter to avoid all the bugs.

Highly recommended for anyone looking for an easier winter hike... very very scenic!
