"Got tight last night on absinthe and did knife tricks. Great success shooting the knife into the piano. The woodworms are so bad and eat hell out of all furniture that you can always claim the woodworms did it."

Good day for a hikeHiked on Saturday, November 1st. Beautiful day.
Pretty typical hike for the area, rocky trail, good views to the south and west near the top. It was lovely weather, the lakes and streams had a fine layer of ice in parts. Realized I was out of film (I still shoot b&w film) when I got to whale lake. :-(

Lots of wildlifeWe saw two moose and a black bear just before arriving at the trailhead, two deer and two loons while hiking, a fox, a raven, and more deer on the way out, and countless mosquitos all along the way. HP11

BUG CENTRAL!!!Even after stopping to take some photos, I was impressed it took me only two hours to complete this seven-mile roundtrip hike. The bugs were HORRIBLE. No-see-ums, black flies, mosquitoes, and these really large/long flying bugs (with fly-eyes) that hikers said take big chunks of skin off. Yikes! At least the abundant dragonflies weren't biting me (I think... lol). Not counting the bug problem, this is a VERY scenic and enjoyable section of the state (and country).
This was the second of seven HPs attained on my most ambitious weekend HP road trip to date.

Tasty berries here!!The wild raspberries and blueberries were common, and very tasty!!! The common loons (official state birds) were not so common, but we saw a pair of them on the lake. The mosquitos (unofficlal state birds) were abundant.

MN Highpoint!Beautiful, thick forest all the way up the trail. Whale Lake is the best part of the hike, in my opinion. The reflection of the trees in the water is just awesome. Further on, the vista near the summit is incredible. Probably the best view anywhere in Minnesota. The trail itself is not very challenging, in terms of endurance, but is very annoying, with basketball-sized rocks everywhere. I don't think I'd do this hike again. The last mile or so out is grueling; the rocks just never end.
The mosquitoes were bad, but I've seen worse, and bug spray wipes worked great. Saw very few other animals -- one tiny garter snake and a squirrel. That was pretty much it besides some birds. It was a great experience overall. Took 4hrs 20min, including 25-30 minutes at the summit for lunch and rest.
One other thing. We brought hiking poles which helped immensely. They saved our knees from being bashed by the rocks on the way down.

HP #14Finding the TH was a challenge in itself;
The route was very scenic...
Coming back from the top and my friend sprained her ankle...
That wasn't a pretty sight!!

MN is niceThis is a fun hike. Whale Lake is nice. I liked hiking through the forest. And there are two really nice overlooks on this mountain. The whole North Shore area of MN I found to be very scenic and beautiful.

Eagle MountainHiked to the top with son Ryan and friends Ed, Joe, and Martha. Very hot day, but a nice hike in the woods. Met several other hikers. Had lunch at the summit and then drove to Grand Marais to participate in the North Shore Dragonboat Races. Fun weekend. HP #17.

Route Climbed: Eagle Mtn. Trail Date Climbed: July '04Great hike for a nice summer day... stood atop the rock at the summit and beat my chest like King Kong. Not much to see at the summit, but there's a great place to catch some beautiful scenery just short of it. Plenty of roots and rocks on the trail so make sure you watch where you're walking or you'll end up flat on your kisser!

Route Climbed: Hiking Trail Date Climbed: August 2003Great hike. Great view. I can't really remember to well but I thought I saw a nice cliff on the south side. Maybe some climbing? Maybe some boulders at the bottom?
