East Fork Fire

East Fork Fire

This picture, a telephoto taken from near The Canyons in Park City, shows a mushroom cloud that erupted from the East Fork Fire in June 2002. The fire started in the East Fork Bear River camp on the north slope of the Uintas. It was caused by boy scouts I believe who started a fire under a dry tree that caught fire at their scout camp. I had just gotten home from a 3-day hike through that area and had not noticed any fire even though I was about 10 miles from it in adjacent basins. This mushroom cloud would rise up and back down again. Crazy to watch, knowing that the fire is 50+ miles away. Anyone care to guess the height??? I have no idea and no good reference point.
