Cool shotI remember looking over to where the register was and remembering how far that last little bit seemed. This is a neat shot as it brings back that memory. Several of our group just stayed at the rim and didn't go after it. Of course the guide encouraged them with the comment that you could count it if you reached the rim. NOT.

Re: Cool shotI think a lot of people don't REALIZE how MASSIVE Rainier really is. I had underwent "BEAUCOUP - HOURS" of "conditioning" before I made my attempt. AND, I was still VERY tired!
I had completely EXAMINED other ROUTES on the mountain, like the Liberty & Ptarmigan Ridge routes ... my CONCLUSION was THEY were for fools. Now, I KNOW the TRICK! You have to be THERE at the right time of the year, & take ADVANTAGE of ALL the conditions. Even then ....... there's always a RISK on RAINIER !!! !!!
Perhaps early geologist BAILEY WILLIS said it best (OF RAINIER): "IT IS THE SYMBOL OF AN AWFUL POWER CLAD IN BEAUTY."

Re. quote"IT IS THE SYMBOL OF AN AWFUL POWER CLAD IN BEAUTY." I think that's very apt and goes for many other volcanoes too. Wonder when Rainier will erupt again.

Re: Re. quoteThat depends on who you talk to.
When I left WA in 1990, some of my friends
with the USGS were saying within the next
50 years.
