East Temple

The east face of The East Temple.

The East Temple is a one of the most well known landmarks in Zion. It is a huge mountain that rises above the east side of the park. Courtney says the route he took was rated 5.6 or so. Several big wall routes have been climbed on the south face. The first ascent of The East Temple was made in 1937 by Glen Dawson, Dick Jones, Homer Fuller, Wayland Gilbert, and Jo Momyer.

Do you mind me asking where this photo was shot from?

Re: Nice

Thank you. I took this photo from Progeny Peak. It's a nice little mountain on the east side of Zion that has great views. I highly recommend it.

Buena Vista!

Good view! It would be interesting to
climb up to that large alcove on the
east side! I suppose it (at one time)
had ancient "Anasazi" living in it.
I love the hanging gardens that decorate
many of Zion's walls! Beautiful, Melinda!

Re: Buena Vista!

Thanks. I’ll watch you climb up to the alcove with my binoculars, it looks a little scary to me! If you are interested in Anasazi ruins you should take a trip to the southeastern corner of Utah. The area around Cedar Mesa and Grand Gulch has hundreds of them.

If the seasonal weather conditions are
in your favor, it really doesn't look
like a big deal to climb up to that alcove.
Sure, you have to have the right gear,
including great climbing shoes and helmet.
There's enough artifacts here in central
Arizona to keep me busy. Can you imagine
if this wet weather keeps up what the
waterfalls and wildflowers are going to
be like in the desert this year???

Re: Mountaingazelle...

Larry, I found this cool story about the East Temple that I thought you might like.

East Temple Fast!

These guys climbed it in less than three hours round trip. I guess there is a way up to the summit that is easier than it looks.

Re: Mountaingazelle...

Melinda, haven't you ever heard the saying:
"Where there's a will there's a way!"

I try to live inside my comfort zone, but
my most memorable moments are when I break
free of the "secure" ropes that bind me
to Mother Earth.

In my next life, I hope to be a Raven; always
flying HIGH above the knife-edged ridges..

Red Rock

Hey Mountaingazelle, I see a good amount of your photography is in red-rock locations. I've done a few trips into Utah. Of all the red-rock locations, do you have a favorite?

Re: Red Rock

Thank you, peninsula! I don't really have one favorite place. I enjoy long day hikes in southern Utah but some of my backpacking trips have been the most memorable.

1) Death Hollow in Escalante. From top to bottom it takes 4 to 5 days although some people only do the lower part of Death Hollow above the Escalante River. Some sections of narrows require swimming to get through the canyon.

2) Parunuweap Canyon near Zion NP. Depending on how much exploring you do it takes 3 to 4 days. I did this from the top down to The Barracks and then hiked out near Checkerboard Mesa. There are several side canyons to hike into including Mineral Gulch and Fat Mans Misery.

3) Dark Canyon is located north of Natural Bridges NM. It's a long drive on dirt roads to get to the trailhead. A lot can be seen in 3 to 4 days. The part between Youngs Canyon and the Colorado River is probably the most interesting.

The Colors

Thank you for sharing the quote from Helen Keller. Perspective sure is everything. The vivid colors that you saw and captured in this picture can only be dreamt about by many blind folks. What a beautiful hunk of rock this is!

Re: The Colors

Thank you, Larry. That quote seemed like the best one I could share with this website. The colors in Zion are hard to beat. The huge cliffs and canyons are unique even compared to other areas in Utah. When I took this photo, I had a different camera than I do now. I just buy the simple point and shoot cameras because of the abuse they take in the mountains.
