Old Hollywood History!  Sucess!

Did it as a night hike and saw a black bear at the junction with the Mount Lowe railway.

Nice short morning hike  Sucess!

Took the Sam Merrill trail. Started out from the trailhead at 10:00. The sun was up but it wasn't yet too warm. It would have been much nicer around 7:00 or 8:00, though. At a light pace, reached the resort remains at around 11:00 or 11:10; spent a few minutes at the top, and returned to the trailhead in about an hour.

The trail has fairly frequent shaded areas.

The LA skyline was all but hidden in haze (it was really incredible how bad it looked), but there were decent views of most places other than downtown. Just poking out of the clouds/fog/haze in the distance, I believe, is the summit of San Jacinto (I'm not entirely sure).

Nice 3 hour hike Rubio Canyon > Echo Mountain > Sam Maril loop  Sucess!

Came back with a 3 person team including my wife and a good buddy. Used my new Gregory for the first time. Bomb proof. Great hike. Trail out of rubio canyon is getting very overgrown. Needs some trail maintenance as it is turning into a bush whack.

Fantastic hike  Sucess!

Took the Sam Merrill Trail, and was very impressed by both the lushness of the chaparral and grandeur of the views. Despite the number of people on the trail, at the top it felt as though there was hardly anyone at all! I rarely repeat hikes, but will make an exception for this one...

First Time  Sucess!

One of the busiest trails I've ever hiked, but the history is interesting. The hotel must have been gorgeous before it burned down.

Climbed morning of March 21, 2015  Sucess!

Not exactly a true wilderness experience, with traffic approaching 5, 10, or 101 status and occasional power lines, but still truly beautiful, and almost sublime with the fog covering the San Gabriel Valley.

Unintended Altadena Ridge scramble!

Did this one in 2012 with my fiancé and now wife. From Rubbio Canyon TH we took a wrong turn and scrambled up Altadena Ridge which made it exciting. Took the regular trail back down. Great to read up on the history of the area and see what remain today. Date is approximate.

easy, popular trail  Sucess!

Good introductory trail. Lots of traffic on it, and it's difficult to get lost on it.

1st Hour  Sucess!

The trail up to this mountain is usually crowded with many people, including runners and dogs, because it is so easy. Better to keep going up to Lowe. Made it here in an hour. Kept going up to Lowe. Been here several times.

Quick and easy after work hike  Sucess!

This hike was just a few miles away while on business in CA so I took a quick run up at the end of the day. Sky was hazy, making it was hard to really see far.

great training hike  Sucess!

I hiked Echo Mountain for the first time in Sept/08. As my first peak ever bagged, I can say the view was stunning and the top was enthralling to reach. Having hikes Echo at least 50 more times since then, I can still say that this is a fun, challenging, and enjoyable hike that leads to longer hikes if you want to go past (e.g. Mount Lowe, Inspiration Point, Markham, Disappointment, San Gabriel, Muir). It's about 2.6 miles up and 2.6 down the same way with a consistent but not overbearing incline. The hardest part is the first mile.
