Two prior trips were rained out, but it paid off with a super green island on St. Patrick's Day. Met a humpback whale on the ride out and 5 island foxes. This hike exceeded expectations.
The day was too windy for kayaking sea caves so I climbed the mountain instead. Found an airplane crash remnants while descending through some canyon.
BEAUTIFUL day!! And great ay to celebrate my husband's birthday. Magnificent views from the top and all along the ridge.
Basically followed Bob Burd's route. No whales but we ran into a mega pod of dolphins (hundreds of them) on the return. With my wife, Caren.
Fun hike with great views all the way. The weather was incredible for January, although a little windy along the ridge. Thanks to everyone for joining me for my list finish and especially Yvonne for carrying champagne and OJ for mimosas on the summit!
This is a great time of year for this peak since the boat will most likely stop for whale watching both to and from the island.
With the family. GORGEOUS DAY!
Windy top, but fabulous views of the Santa Barbara Channel, the rest of the Channel Islands and the Ventura coastline.
Nice day, great weather, fun time. Trip Report
Camped at Scorpion Canyon. Wind was very strong during the night, but the tent held. Campsites 1-15 were a little more sheltered. Nice hike up to El Montanon. I enjoyed seeing the waters around the islands where I participated in a large naval exercise in the 70's.
from prisoners to scorpian
We backpacked from Prisoner's to Scorpion which crosses Montanon Ridge just a few hundred feet shy of the peak. Great views! The trail is very narrow and rocky and steep in spots (from the Prisoner's side especially).
Day-hiked this one with Steven Stembridge during a day excursion boat trip from Ventura harbor. Beautiful weather and scenic views came down the Scorpion Canyon Trail
Hiked on a very clear day with the wind ripping up on the ridge. We took the trail from the upper campground above Scorpion. The views from the top are great.
Camped on the Island and did several dayhikes, including this one. I would love to return some day or explore the other islands.
If anyone is also a birder out there, don't miss out on the endemic Island Scrub Jay- keep an eye on the oaks, mainly.
Did this peak during a archaeological survey trip. One of the most amazing hikes of my life. The views of the islands spreading out from the summit are insane. I lead the Lower Peaks section to this one. An amazing peak!
