Climbed after summitting Tsoodził (Mt. Taylor) and hiking El Calderon in El Malpais earlier in the day. Beautiful, historic area with a fun short hike!
Replacing lost summit log...
Great and funky outing with Lynn. I recall the box canyon, the cool undulating summit area and some old carved writings on lower walls.
We covered a lot of New Mexico in the week we camped down there.
I also recommend a visit to nearby El Malpais National Monument.
I thought this was a neat hike to the inscriptions and top of the bluff. Historical area and nice place to explore along with nearby El Malpais.
My favorite part was walking on the rocks on top.
I enjoyed climbing it with my parents and sister.
El Morro is probably my favorite place in New Mexico. It is a large sandstone outcrop forming a large hill, peak or bluff that stands all alone in an isolated region. There are many ancient petroglyphs and many signatures dating from 1605 AD to the early 1900’s. There is a nice trail circling the peak and then climbing to the top of it. The top of the peak is a nice fantasy land of color with big pine trees growing out of the solid rock.
