Emerald Mountain?  Sucess!

Main trail is an access road so we took the side trails by the meadow and got much nicer views. Lots of bikers so watch for signs showing bike only trails. Nice view of the Steamboat Ski resort and valley just before you start up the Lane of Pain trail. We took LoP to get to summit. LoP is also just an access road so not very scenic. Top of mountain is a cell tower facility (hence the access road) with essentially no views so only recommend it if you must say you summited otherwise its better to take one of several side trails for more flowers, trees and wildlife to see

Exploring the Emerald trails  Sucess!

Climbed with Rachael, Matt and Lila. Spent the day in Steamboat with my girlfriend, her brother and his girlfriend and went for a hike up the Emerald Mtn trail system, realized we were so close to the summit that we just went for it. Used Blackmere to Prayer Flag to Stairway to Heaven to Lane of Pain up, then Lane of Paie to Quarry Mtn to Blackmere down. About 8 miles round trip.

Emerald  Sucess!

March 4 2017

Kimberly and I snowshoed up Emerald Mountain. It was a warm and partly cloudy day. I was sick so I was slow up the mountain. Kimberly waited at the Quarry, while I went for the summit.

March 26 2016

Kessler and I snowshoed up to the summit of Emerald Mountain on a nice day and with good snow conditions. I did get a blister, so I was dragging a little, but other than that it was a routine ascent.

December 20 2014

I climbed Emerald Mountain near Steamboat Springs today. It was snowing, but due to the low elevation of the peak, conditions were not severe. I made it to the summit and back using the standard route.

October 26 2013

Kim had to work, so Kessler, Shaylee and I climbed Emerald Mountain. Because we went to a library presentation on Mt Everest and other peaks, we got a late start so we didn’t poke around much. We made the summit via the standard trail because all the side trails were officially closed because of mud. We took a break on the summit and returned the same way.

June 1 2013

Shaylee, Kessler and I went for a climb of Emerald Mountain. We got a fairly late start so moved fairly quickly. We took the main trail up before switching to the Blair Witch Trail. We followed this a short distance and then turned onto the longer Quarry Mountain Trail which we followed to the top of the ridge. From the ridge we followed it south and west over the summit and then descended to the old quarry via an indistinct trail.

It was a good climb.

February 4 2012

Kessler, Shaylee, Kimberly and I made a winter ascent of Emerald Mountain. The weather was sunny and the views were nice. On the upper slopes of the mountain we took the Lane of Pain (name of the trail) to the ridge and headed back east over the summit and took a more direct route (breaking trail along the way) to the north.

It was a good climb, but since the kids stayed up late the night before they dragged a little towards the summit. It took 3 hours to climb the mountain and 1:15 to descend.

April 23 2011

It was a gloomy spring day, but it was also a day the kids needed to get out, so we set off for an attempt on Emerald Mountain. We had stayed up late the night before going to some hot springs and I also made breakfast in bed for Kim so we didn’t get an early start Saturday.

We started from the town of Steamboat Springs and headed towards the mountain on snowshoes. It was cloudy and gloomy and the kids weren’t moving that fast, so half way up the mountain Kimberly and Shaylee decided to head back down.

Just after they headed down, it began to snow hard, but Kessler and I pushed on to the summit. On the last part of our route was not broken, so the climb was more challenging and took much longer than expected so we basically went non-stop to the summit. We arrived at the summit pretty late so we didn’t stop at all, but instead went right over the top and down the north face (because it was shorter than our ascent route). It was a mix of cloudy skies and snow, but it wasn’t very windy, so conditions were not extreme.

After descending the mountain, we met Kimberly and Shaylee who were happy to see us.

May 30 2009

Kessler, Shaylee, Kim and I decided to climb Emerald Mountain. We actually did a 7.2 mile loop passing over the summit of Emerald Mountain, Agate Point and Air Cone Point. It took us five and a half hours.

The snow has melted and there was only a little mud, but the mosquitoes were out in places. Other than that it was a great hike with only a little rain and there were good views of the Park Range, Flat Tops and Elkhead Mountains. This weekend will also be our last in this area for a while as we will be living in Granby for a while.
