Erica soloing on the P3 of the Nutcracker 5.8 - we met her while getting ready to climb pitch 4. Seeing her solo this route was probably the most impressive part of our climb - August 22, 2004

Note: Less than a year after our encounter Erica Kutcher perished in an avalanche in the mountains of Pakistan. Only then I found out who and what an accomplished climber she was. She was 27. RIP.

5.9?

Hey Kris, 5.9?? I thought nutcracker was 5.8?? I also had a free solo climber pass me on it, but wasn't nearly as nice looking (at least to me)...

Re: 5.9?

John, you're right. I guess I wrote 5.9 because the 1st pitch variation we did was 5.9 - I can't find another explanation :)

ahhh...

Happiness and sadness all at once. Erika was quite a special person. I have some fun shots of her I might post up at some point. She was tons of fun and always left people smiling.

Re: ahhh...

I think you should Randy. I wish I'd had a chance to get to know her.

Re: How Sad

She died while climbing in Pakistan around Trango Group. A great lost. God bless her soul.
