There are about 20 species of cotton-grass, occurring chiefly in the cooler parts of the Northern Hemisphere, always in wet places. The name is from the Greek erion
, wool or cotton, and phoros
, bearing, referring to the cottony flower heads.
Look for the various species of cotton-grass at swamps, marshes and the shores of subalpine lakes in the mountains or tundra of the far north. If you are in a area with lots of cotton-grass, you are in a nice place, but your feet are probably wet.
Please submit your cotton-grass photos, there are some good ones on SP.
