Hard to climb down because the view of the front side of RMNP is spectacular from up here. The little pick-and-choose "scramble" to the top is a blast, too.
on Longs Peak.
A before-daylight start allowed us to get great pictures of sun-hit on Longs.
Used N trail in '04
Had already hiked 7 miles and had two and a half hours to climb. The last .7 miles is steep and Estes Cone has a fun summit block. Leave more then two and a half hours to climb or you will end up running it.
Hiked from Long's Peak TH. Beautiful day and nice views.
First summit for my wife. The last 0.7 mile push makes the climb worthwhile. Cool scramble to gain the summit block. Got robbed of views of Longs as it was in clouds the whole time. Great day!
Great views on top to the East. Wonderful day for climbing a small peak. Incredible views of Longs Peak. Reached the summit w/ my wife. Great day on the trail!
Met Greg from Ft. Collins at the trailhead and had a nice hike up the cone. Some cool scrambling near the top. Great views of Longs Peak from the top- we hung around the summit for 45 minutes or so and then headed over to RMNP for some shorter hikes.
We set off to climb Long's Peak. It was very windy and cold which made it obvious that we weren't going to summit. So we bushwhacked down from just below Granite Pass towards Storm Pass and met the Estes Cone trail. At one point we stopped to watch some elk sliding down a small patch of snow. We were sure they were playing because a couple of them came back to the top and slid a second time...amazing to watch. I've been back another time in the winter.
Total ascents = 3. Nice summit view.
My first summit of the year. It was storming pretty much everywhere West of Longs Peak but I lucked out and had OK weather. From the summit, I was able to view 11 other peaks that I have climbed within R.M.N.P. The continental divide was draped in stormy clouds.
Excellent easy winter hike with rewarding views. The trail was well packed, so no snowshoes were needed This is a great warmup hike for out of staters looking to climb Longs.
First time I brought an ice axe on a hike. I didn't need it of course, but I felt really tough!
We did this as a "training" hike for Longs the next week. I'm not sure if it worked, but 2 out of 3 of us made it up Longs.
My first hike ever in Colorado. The one that started it all. What would life have been like if not for this?
Fun, short and easy mountain. Nice view of biggest peaks in RMNP.
Very fun hike because my whole family went with me! The elevation can be a bit strenuous for us low-landers, but it's a great workout! Beautiful views of Longs/ The Diamond (wish I was up there), Estes Park, and Lumpy Ridge.
I've Climbed up this, as I recall someone saying once, an extinct volcano, many times. It's a good alternative to Longs peak, Chasam lake and Lily Lake with little people traffic. The path is fairly straight up with little switchbacks. A nice piece for a short day outing.
