Everest base camp trek is one of the most popular trekking in Nepal. There are thousands of trekkers visit base camp trek every season. Everest base camp trek is also known as a base camp trek in Nepal.
Everest base camp trek begins after a scenic mountain flight to Lukla from Kathmandu and leads the trail to Phakding, Namche Bazar, Tengboche, Dingboche, Lobuche, and Gorakshep then reach to the world's highest mountain base camp. Everest region is also known as the Khumbu region.
Autumn and Spring are the best seasons to trek to here. September to December and March to May are recommended months for this trek. Winter has also a nice view but it will be freezing cold during the winter. Summer is not a good idea to trek to base camp because of the bad weather for flight to Lukla and the floor will be very wet and slippery. Spring is a bit warmer than the Autumn so trekking during October and November needs warmer layers.
Normal itinerary of the Everest base camp trek is 12 days from Kathmandu to Kathmandu but this trek can be done in 7 days, 10 days, 11 days, and more than 12 days according to the visitor's fitness. Here is an itinerary for 12 days which a common itinerary of the base camp trek.
Day - 1: Fly to Luka from Kathmandu:- We fly in the early morning to Lukla from Kathmandu which takes about a half an hour. After our arrival at Lukla, have a short hot drinks break and prepare the trek and trek to Phakding. This is our first day of the trek so we just walk about 3 hours. After passing Lukla, we reach to Chheplung village and see Dudhkoshi river. We pass some Buddhist mani walls, Mani wheels, and other monuments along the trail and reach Phakding. Overnight at Phakding.
Day - 2: Trek from Phakding to Namche:- After our breakfast at the lodge, we start our second day walk to Namche. Today we cross 5 suspension bridges for the same river (Dudhkoshi). This 6-7 hours trek is not difficult for the first part before our lunch but the second part after the lunch is steep. After crossing the highest bridge, the trail ascends about 3 hrs to Namche. Overnight at a lodge.
Day - 3: Acclimatization day in Namche:- Today we have an easy day which is an important day too. We hike to the Everest view hotel which takes about 2 hrs. Everest view hotel is at the height of 3868 meters above the sea level. We see the stunning view of the Everest Himalaya today including Mt. Everest, Amadablam, and more. We may have some drinks at the Everest view hotel with a nice view then return back to the lodge in Namche. Overnight at the lodge.
Day - 4: Trek from Namche Bazar to Tengboche:- We trek about 5 hours today following the beautiful trail with a fantastic view. Tengboche is a hill station with the Buddhist monastery which is a very old monastery. We may visit this monastery after 3 pm or early morning around 6 am. Tengboche is an open hill from where we can see the stunning view of the Everest massif.
Day - 5: Trek from Tengboche to Dingboche:- Today we have another 5 hrs walk to Dingboche and cross the tree line so every day after this place, enjoy the mountain views. Dingboche is the highest Sherpa village on the side of Chhukung village. Facing Island peak from Dingboche is incredible. Overnight at the lodge.
Day - 6: Acclimatization day in Dingboche:- This s our second day of the acclimatization during the Everest base camp trek. We hike up to the Naggar-Tsang hill from where we see Nepal's 4th highest mountain Makalu and more Everest mountains. After a couple of hours hiking towards the hill, we hike back to Dingboche. Overnight at the lodge.
Day - 7: Trek from Dingboche to Lobuche:- After our breakfast, we trek to Lobuche. Enjoying the view of the Everest beauty, reach Thukla where we can stop for our early lunch or just for drinks. We cross Thukla pass from here where can see the monuments of the death climbers and the trail leads flat going until Lobuche. Overnight in Lobuche.
Day - 8: Trek from Lobuche to Gorakshep and hike to Everest base camp:- Today is our special day that we are reaching to our main destination. We trek to Gorakshep which takes us about three hours and have a quick lunch here. We leave our stuff at the lodge and hike to EBC. Total hike to go and come back takes about 5 hours from Gorakshep and overnight in the lodge.
Day - 9: Hike to Kalapatthar to see view and trek to Pheriche:- We hike in the early morning to Kalapatthar to see Sunrise on the mountains. We see a very close view of the mount. Everest from here and hike back to the lodge then have our breakfast. We trek same way back until Thukla from Gorakshep then takes the right trail to Pheriche. Overnight in Pheriche.
Day - 10: Trek from Pheriche to Namche:- Long but not difficult day to Namche from Pheriche follows the same trail which we already would have been passed on the way to the base camp then arrive Namche. Overnight in Namche.
Day - 11: Trek from Namche to Lukla:- Today is our last day of the trek. We trek back to Phakding and have lunch then trek all the way to Lukla. We may celebrate our last mountain stay visiting bar and coffee shops. Overnight in Lukla.
Day - 12: Fly back to Kathmandu:- We have an early morning flight from Lukla to Kathmandu. With some beautiful memories of the mountain, we come back to the city.
Getting the flight ticket to the Lukla is very hard if we don't book our flight earlier in advance. Getting accommodation is also difficult in some places with limited lodges and many trekkers will be during the high season. We fly directly to higher than 2800 meters above sea level so altitude problem may be also the problem so for this talk to the guide is a good idea.
