LOVE this section of the trail. The last .1 mile is hand over hand and pulling yourself up. I THINK I just might like that technical stuff...

Frozen RungsTried descending the loop trail today and danged if the hole to the rungs wasn't covered by a couple feet of ice. Oh well maybe next month. Great pics imzadi.

ThanksWe think about Tumbledown a lot...love it. Have been wondering about this trail in the Winter...I THINK someone in EMS stated they did it in March...had to kind of go around it. Yea...around it...that's what I said too.."how the heck?"

Re: ThanksThe Loop trail is a great winter adventure. A friend and I did it late December/early January last winter. The upper steep section was very icy. We each carried one ice tool and picked our way up the trail. I cut steps in a number of places. Fat Man's Misery was coated in several inches of ice. My friend squirmed her way through with just the ice tool for assistance. I popped on my crampons for this section and found them helpful. It was great fun and it was beautiful up there in the winter.
You definitely want to have some mountaineering skills to do the Loop Trail in the winter but it is a worthwhile trip, for sure.

Ropes?Gotta be ropes. My kids, 9 & 11, are itching to try Parker Ridge from the Brook trailhead. Saturday looks sweet.

TumbledownMy Daugther and I have climbed it each summer. She went up the loop trail when she was six years old. She made it through Fat Man's Misery using a caribiner and ropes as I pulled her through from the top. It is great to take a swim in Crater lake on the top once you summit. The views are awesome and the only negative is the black flies. See you on the top.

Sure looks like a jolly tight squeeze! ;-)To me too, those rungs look as familiar as ever, after so and so many hikes in Austria and South Tyrol...
