Fish Lake HightopOctober 16 2022
I had some time off so I backpacked to the summit of Fish Lake Hightop. In order to make it more of a hike, I hiked up Tasha Creek which is the long way up. The leaves were mostly gone, but there were still a few nice ones around. I had planned to camp half way up Tasha Creek, but it was dry except for the lower end so I hiked all the way up to Tasha Spring and camped at 11,430 feet.

It was a chilly 14F in the morning, but once the sun came out it was nice. I hiked to the summit boulders and then headed back down, packing up camp along the way.

21st County High Point of UtahFrom Hwy 25, I drove FR 352 to FR 325. FR 325 was very rough, but I manage to drive to Tasha Springs (end of the road) 3.6 miles from FR 352. 4x4 and clearance was needed. You could easily get a flat tire on this rough rocky track. 21st County High Point of Utah, only 8 more to go!

couple on a questWe're on a quest to summit the Utah county high points. Otherwise, why bother with this one? We drove to the trailhead sign just below the summit. Forest roads 057 and 329 would make lovely autumn drives in any sort of vehicle. Forest road 352, on the other hand, requires a high-clearance vehicle to traverse the rock gardens. The FS uses the term "road" very loosely in relation to this truck path. Don't try to take your AWD here.
The walk from the car to the summit was also of interest. We couldn't find a trail. Nor could we find a marked path from the trailhead to the bus-sized rocks surrounding and constituting the summit. No cairns. Occasional foot and hoof prints. Just keep ascending and you'll eventually see cairns on top of a boulder or a USGS reference marker in a boulder pointing the way to the summit boulder. Good luck tracing the same track back to the car, too.
This was our third county highpoint of the day, so the sun was in our eyes as we drove out on 329 and 057.

the High Top!hiked from campsite in Bowery Creek campground up Pelican Canyon - 2 hr 40 min to benchmark. I spent a pleasant hour on the summit with binoculars - distance to the south obscured by smoke from wildfires.

Mountain Bike After WorkParked the CRV that didn't have enough clearance and mountain biked the remaining 3 miles to the trailhead before hiking the last 0.2 miles. The West Valley Fire smoke near St. George was starting to reach the Sevier Plateau at this time. Otherwise, the skies were clear. Ran into a hunter scoping out the area for elk since he had a tag for the fall.

sweet summitI took advantage of an immediate family reunion at Fsihlake to grab a county highpoint. My family camped at Bowery creek campground. I took the trail that takes off just up the road from the campground host and meets up with the pelican canyon trail after about a mile. I took the right hand fork at the pond. The summit is truly unique. I decided to walk south on the road to try and find the way that would bring me through the left hand fork. I did not find it and ended up bushwhacking quite a bit. It was still fun. Some day I'd like to go up there and see where the left fork goes. Took me 2 1/2 hours up and just under 2 hours down.

Pelican Point Right Fork4.1 miles from pelican point trailhead up the right hand fork to the high point. Gorgeous June day. Snow has just melted in the last week or two. Lots of wildflowers and bird to enjoy along the hike. The whole thing took me 3 hours 45 min up and back. UT CoHP # 13 for me.

Nice hikeWe drove almost to the top and then hit the summit, Point 11567, and Whiskey Knoll. I don't remember any views from the actual summit, but the views from 11567 and Whiskey Knoll were great. We also did Big Flat/10897 and Point 9549.

Fish Lake HightopFrom Pelican Canyon. There is still a lot of snow above 10,500 feet. Once on the plateau I was able to follow GPS coordinates to within a few boulders of the summit. It was a perfectly clear day and I was able to enjoy the great views while eating lunch on top. Last person to sign the summit register was in early April. On the way back to SL I did Monroe Peak outside of Richfield, another 4k prominence peak.

Snow!Snowshoed all the way to the hightop via Pelican Canyon. For the first part of the route it was pretty easy to follow the summer trail. As the elevation increased it got harder to tell where the trail went and was easier to just keep moving up in generally the correct direction.
Once on top of the plateau, visibility dropped to 150-200ft due to blowing snow but I easily found the high point using my GPS. Had a short lunch, signed the log, and snowshoed back down.

Rub a Dub DubHot Tub For one please! Now this is my type of place. Bouldering, Grouse to chase, lakes to swim in. Then a nice little cold tub for one on the summit for me. Yep, pretty sure this is a favorite. I really enjoyed out jumping the humans up onto the summit rock.

Step into a slim jim on top of High TopIt looks like there are a few single pitch rock climbs that you can do near the summit.
This mountain was unique. The approach reminded me of jaunts through the Wasatch, but the plateau was special. It was one continuous meadow with trees and large boulders strewn about like the headstones of long past giants.
It made me want to get a cookie dough blizzard (which happened).
*Note: the mosquitoes were lame and I ended up running down the last mile of trail.

Plateau PrancingWarm temperatures and pressure fluctuations from rain the previous day had encouraged the sap to flow freely and abundantly from the trees - you could see the amber resin dripping down from all of the branches and boles. So lovely! Nothing more perfect than walking through these conifer stands on a summer day.

Total Package.Something around 12 miles round trip from the Pelican Canyon Overlook took us to the top of Fish Lake Hightop. I personally found the entire hike quite exquisite. The grove of Aspen was spectacular near the trailhead. The shaded canyon offered enticing scents of fir trees that reminded you of Christmas morning. Grouse protecting young from fallen logs over moss covered streams gave you that reminder you are in true wilderness. The top with the boulders in the meadow to remind you of a bygone cemetery. There was the top with waterpockets in the large boulders and you can't hate the opportunities to walk among ancient volcanoes. Springs sprung from many different areas on this hike, and not to mention a small lake 3 miles up Pelican Canyon. This was one incredible hike. Well I mean it was ok.

Fall brillianceGreat fall colors and an interesting plateau with great views. An enormous full yellow moon lit our way down. Fish lake looks like an its perched on the edge of the world from near the trailhead. Backpacked in Dark Canyon for 5 days after this and Ellen.

Fish LakeWanted to see Pando, the aspen colony, and climb this while I was at it. The aspen were really spectacular and a really pleasant hike. The summit boulder had a bunch of puddles with a lot of tadpoles in them. Pretty cool.
