Quick Hike  Sucess!

Did it in 3 hrs roundtrip. Fun glissade down the front side. Awesome views of the Chugach and Anchorage. We did Peak 2 and 3 later on.

Great first day in Alaska  Sucess!

Landed in Achorage and hit the hotel around 3:30am Saturday but thanks to jet anti-lag, was atop Flattop by 10am. Wide, easy trail up to the second saddle, then rock hopping and scrambling for a short stretch beneath the broad, flat summit.

Crazy Busy!  Sucess!

It's a fun little hike with great views but the crowd is amazing. I think half of Anchorage came out to hike that day. Still a bit of snow with some shirtless meatheads sliding down in board shorts and white frogskins.

Winter Fun  Sucess!

Little fun snow outing. Played around in the snow chutes with the new poons and axe. Very user friendly.

Have climbed this many times. For full moons, my first Anchorage hike, etc. Its way too busy and built up. Many other peaks around much better! Try Wolverine

Memorial Day Climb  Sucess!

On our first trip to Alaska...this was our first mountain to climb. It was a nice scramble at the top, although a little crowded. Make sure you take time to look at the interesting alpine flora in addition to the views in all directions.

First Alaskan Summit  Sucess!

Climbed on the 4th and again on the 5th. Extremely windy up top on the 5th--like nothing I've ever experienced! Not a long or difficult hike, but lots of fun side scrambles. Alaskan wilderness is so beautiful and nearby Ptarmigan looks very intimidating! I can't believe the peaks around here are only 3,000-5,000 ft; they have a real alpine look and feel to them.

Winter Climb  Sucess!

My buddies and I made a good climb out of Flattop by going in the winter. The weather was great - only 20 degrees and the moon made the snowscape bright enough to turn off our headlamps. We took a direct rout to the summit, no going around on the stairs or on the old north face path. Getting to the top without crampons or was difficult, but we managed to. I don't suggest it! :) For a reward, we jumped off the western chute and slid back down to the second bench.

Rocks  Sucess!

Lots of rocks, that can be slippery. But I had lots of fun.

Blueberries  Sucess!

Hiked up with my wife and 6 year old granddaughter. The 6 year old powered right up. We stopped and picked blueberries on the way down. It was a beautiful sunny day with just enough wind to keep the bugs down.

Tons of teenagers  Sucess!

We got one of the last spots in the TH parking lot. We must have passed 100000 teenagers that were in various states of trying to out-cool each other (iPod in hand, polo shirt collar up, flip flops, reeking of cologne).

Still we enjoyed every bit of the hike, and were rewarded with the brief scramble just below the top. We hung out on top until nearly sunset, after the crowds left. On the way to the car, we spotted 3 moose, 1 that blocked progress to the TH. We watched the sunset from the viewpoint after the TH, up on the knoll. Celebratory beers ensued.

BTW, I had climbed this once or twice as a young kid, but I have little recollection of it, especially of the scrambling.

Success  Sucess!

Tried this one earlier in the year when there was still a fair amount of snow and I had horrible shoes for hiking and ended up turning around since horrible tennis shoes and exposed snow fields don't mix well. Met this one with success; the last section of rock is pretty exposed but there are excellent hand holds and foot holds, so as long as you keep your eyes forward and don't look down, it is pretty doable if exposure bothers you. Nice hike, but there are some better ones right outside of town.

My first Alaskan Summit  Sucess!

I just moved up to the Anchorage and Flattop Mountain proved to be a nice way to get out and see some nice viewsof the Chugach Range. Lots of ash from Mt. Redoubt all over the snowfields.

there's always Flattop  Sucess!

I started the day climbing Penguin Peak, and had to turn back because of some snowfields I didn't want to cross by myself. So I drove along the Seward Highway and took in some sights. I decided to go and do Flattop real quick before dinner with my family later. I started at 2:20 in the aftrenoon, and was back down by 4:10 pm. You can make it to the top in under an hour. There was a lot of people there, but it wasn't that bad. I was expecting it, so it is what it is. Some rain started to make it's way over while I was on the summit, so I hurried back down. People were still heading up in the rain, but it was just a summer shower, though by the time I made it back to the house in Anchorage it was a thunderstorm, so...

Great hike with nice views  Sucess!

Nice hike with a challenging summit scramble. Hard to believe this mount presents avalanche hazards in the winter.

Chugach  Sucess!

Great hike on a beautiful day. Had the whole mountain to myself on the way up. Continued on to Peak Two and Peak Three. Wanted to go farther but had to get back to Anchorage for breakfast!
