Walking on water...Is the Great Salt Lake still in a drought zone? Assuming that's why the causeway is dry at this time...

Re: Walking on water...The last two winters were really dry. This year, it's a mixed bag so far with some high elevations being above average and some below, but at low elevations there is no snow at all and it's been really warm. We normally have snow in our yard from Thanksgiving to March, but it all melted weeks ago and has been in the high 50's.

Re: Kit Carson?Yes it is. He marked a cross on a distinctive rock near the top. We found the right rock, but couldn't find the cross and didn't want to spend a long time looking for it as we had a long way to go. Also, at the time, we thought it might be on the snowy side and would take some effort to unearth, but I think it was exposed and we had only to look in the right spot.

Re: SPI'd bet that walking to the South Pole involves more ups and downs :)
One thing that gave this hike an eerie feel was the fog layer. We were in the middle of a mild inversion. In a worse inversion, the fog would have been quite thick and the walk would have been down right creepy.
