from the switchbacks on Swiftcurrent Pass Trail

Looking east from the switchbacks leading up to Swiftcurrent Pass. The nearest body of water is Bull Head Lake, with two small unnamed ponds farther downstream. Next is Red Rock Lake, with massive Lake Sherburne far off in the distance. This entire valley is filled with wildlife, with moose being sighted on a very regular basis around the lakes. Bears also frequent the area, and the trail is subject to temporary closure at times. July 7, 2008

Moose

The bear-problem gets a lot of coverage but I wonder if there are any moose attacks.

funny you should mention

the very next photo i snapped after this panoramic was that of two tourists standing within 30 yards of a large bull moose in the valley a few thousand feet below. they were WAY too close! for whatever reason, the bull didn't mind however. my 300mm telephoto didn't turn out the greatest, or else i'd post it, but moose certainly do pose a problem in Glacier.

this past summer, the only scary moose encounter i heard of came from one of my fellow employees, who was kayaking from Swiftcurrent Lake up to Lake Josephine. right before he reached Josephine, a cow moose and her calf emerged along the nearby shore. he froze, listened to mama huff and puff a little bit, and slowly turned his kayak around and headed downstream. the cow trotted along side him for awhile, but fortunately she felt safe with him heading in the opposite direction and left him alone. i can only imagine what was going through his head at the time!
