Full report on how to climb the Fuya Fuya

Hi guys!
In December 2021 we climbed the Fuya Fuya, the Cayambe and the Chimborazo volcanos. Here I am sharing with you a full documentary with plenty of information on how we organised our trip:

Take care and good luck with your expedition!

Fuya Fuya   Sucess!

Today Kessler, Shaylee, and I climbed the beautiful Fuya Fuya volcano. It was a nice climb and had some fun scrambling.

No View From The Top (Cloud Coverage), But Still Great!  Sucess!

My wife and I climbed Fuya Fuya in April 2021. We were the only ones on the hiking trail. The trailhead can be a bit difficult to find but any of the trails directly next to the Mojanda Lake parking lot will lead to the main trail. You'll see the main trail quickly and it will be obvious.

The hike is very steep; you'll start at 12k and ascend to 14k in about a mile, so prepare for up, up, up.

Worth getting to the top! We didn't have a good view of the lake due to cloud coverage, but still really fun.

If you are trying to climb Fuya Fuya from Quito, DO NOT follow Google Maps. One route they recommend is very, very wrong. Go to Otavalo and use Maps.me to find the trailhead.

Fuya Fuya 1 & 2  Sucess!

Relatively easy day climb to lower peak the 2nd summit peak is more technical but no problem in dry conditions. I like to descend to the west to avoid returning down the tricky scramble. Always a spectacular day this was probably my 9th summit of Fuya Fuya. Retrace this hike @ https://www.relive.cc/view/1339803301

Stormy walk  Sucess!

Hiked up to the lower summit of Fuya Fuya in dense fog within about an hour. We were then gifted with hail and increasingly angry thunder, and we elected to climb the main summit another day in safer conditions

Climbed Fuya Fuya with the parents to the saddle (but they didn't want to go higher.) Good warm-up climb.

Fuya Fuya lower summit  Sucess!

Climbed Fuya Fuya lower summit from Laguna Mojanda campsite with Universidad de San Francisco Quito's Andinismo class.

Easy hike on a trail through paramo for most of the journey. If I come back, swimming in that volcanic lake and climbing Cerro Negro are on my to-do list.

Great Escape from Quito  Sucess!

The 24-hour shifts at the Maternidad Isidro Ayora were started to get to me. Luckily, I found a few new Ecuadorian friends willing and able to explore. The peak wasn't too cold, but there were some powerful gusts of wind. Cayambe was concealed by clouds but the volcanic chain all the way to Illiniza was visible. The mountains are bigger than they appear in photos. Amazing!

Bad weather, no views.  Sucess!

Climbed with Rob (HOL) to the true summit (4,263 m / 13,982 ft) in only 2 hours RT.

Light rain accompanied us all the way up to the summit. The final rocky wall was wet but we managed to scrambled it up. The best part of the climb!

We didn't have good views except for the Andean range covered totally by snow in the distance from North to South as low as 4,000m meters.

Great weather, awesome views!!  Sucess!

Climbed Fuya Fuya's northeastern summit (which involves less technical climbing than the true western summit) with my five new friends from Poland, Belgium and Holland. We had great weather and awesome views of the surroundings, including views of volcanoes as far as Chimborazo to the south and Chiles to the north.

Both on a day hike from Otavalo  Sucess!

I took a taxi from the panamericana to Laguna Mojanda. Walked through the paja on the normal route to the first peak of Fuya Fuya in a hour, then twenty minutes over the rim to the real summit. Then walked the road around the lake the the Cerro Negro trailhead (1,5 hrs). Good views on top, some clouds. There is a map a the trailhead, and then signs all the way to the top. Lots of false summits but then got to the real summit of Cerro Negro. Went down on the back to the road. Got a ride back to the Panamericana near Cayemba from some nice folks from Quito. Saw caracaras around Cerro Negro, colibries and smaller birds.
