Garden Wall & Many Glacier

Garden Wall & Many Glacier

View south from summit of Altyn Peak. When visitors enter the Many Glacier Valley, they are often surprised to find out that the steep wall visible from Swiftcurrent Lake is in fact the east side of the famed Garden Wall, so prominent from Going-to-the-Sun Road. The peak at the extreme left of the photo is Piegan Mountain; crossing the saddle to the next high point is Pollock Mountain, where the Garden Wall begins. Its jagged ridge top can be followed to Bishop's Cap, the highest non-mountain point on the wall. The unbelievable, sheer east face of Mount Gould drops nearly 4,000 feet to the valley below. To the right of Gould lies Gem Glacier, perched high above its more popular neighbor, Grinnell Glacier (out of sight). Behind the wall, the summit of Heaven's Peak can be glimpsed, with Mount Grinnell farthest to the right on the photo. Following the ridge from Mount Grinnell down and to the left leads to Grinnell Point, one of the staples of the Many Glacier Valley. Lake Josephine sits quietly amidst it all. June 30, 2009
