Gary Sohler attempting an off-route second pitch on "The Right Side" on Merlin Dome.
Merlin is on the north side of the ridge housing The Needles. The apron of Merlin Dome is a scant 15 minutes' scramble up from the road, and the routes range from 3 to 5 pitches (~200m) and 5.4 to 5.9 in difficulty.
The red sling in the lower part of the photo was a fixed (bail-out?) stopper, which we removed so other parties would not be tempted into this false start of a pitch.
